great link Joe. I too have a client in content marketing that makes 100K+/year. A great person with non-guru status. The guy can just crank out material like nobody I've met. Anyway, just letting people know it possible because I see the money and bank statements. It is possible. Not likely, but possible.

I agree. It is possible. I certainly haven't done it but that is due in part to poor health and the inability to do it full time. But if you work full time and work hard to collect regular clients, then yo can do it. It does mean marketing every day!

      She did it. And wrote;

And I took six weeks totally off from work and worked only a few hours a week another four to six weeks throughout the year. I did a happy dance in my kitchen at the end of November

What are you agreeing with? The fact she did it says it is possible.

Not really. According to her post, she made more money when she had fewer clients. Plus she put her focus on a narrow, lucrative niche. You don't need a ton of content to make six figures, e.g., 20 white papers a year will get you there.

Sounds like you define content as the kind of $5 articles that come from content mills.

At mere dollars a pop, six figures is damn near impossible.

Charging market rates for excellent work and not narrowly defining content as articles and blog posts? Totally possible, and without the carpal tunnel from overwork/overuse.

If you're a high-quality writer who is reliable, knows the industry you're writing in and works full-time, then it's not that big of a stretch.

I love reading people's posts about how they made it big with whatever they're doing. Naturally the writer doesn't mention everything that broke through for her but she does offer a couple good tidbits. thanks for the share.

I enjoy stories like that too, although I'd rather have a little more detail on where the money came from. I think at the end of the day, all of us are curious how one another finds/negotiates with clients, works our content calendars, the amount of time each day we take away from writing (which is big for me), etc.

I haven't done my taxes yet, but I'm pretty sure this will be the first year I'm under $100k out of the past five. I've been working on launching another business though and November/December just stunk for me on top of it.

Anyway, it is definitely possible to break the six-figure mark fairly regularly; it just takes the discipline to keep your calendar full even when you feel like taking a week off to watch the Breaking Bad marathon (I was guilty of that in 2013...but it was worth it).

Making $100k with writing requires, hard work, determination and tons of ideas. Plus, you should be able to weave those ideas into words.

  • 5. I only worked with nice people. I am sensitive (probably one of the most sensitive people you will ever meet) and find it very stressful to work with jerky people.
Man I am having this message hammered home HARD with one of my current clients.

I'm convinced there are clients out there who hire writers not because they need them, but simply as an excuse to torture someone else.

  • Some good food for thought there...for a copywriter.

namely...having fewer high paying clients and specializing in a niche.

Great article! Thanks for sharing that Joe.

It's inspiring to see a fellow copywriter earning what she deserves. Maybe it's time for me to take freelancing more seriously outside of my copywriting day job!
