Hi I want to start a blog where I showcase my writing for future clients. The blog will also serve as my portfolio . At the moment I'm stuck between re-writing bad copy that I see online and creating fictitious copy(i.e copy from the top of my head.) Which is better?

Write about things you're passionate about.

Get ideas from niche specific blogs, news stories, Facebook groups and forum topics currently in the public domain.

Do not copy but create something original with your own thoughts and perspectives, statistics, angles etc.

Try to develop your own voice.

    Just start writing.

You can always improve it as you go along.

  • If it is agonising, frustrating and time consuming to do…

And can you really say something illuminating, fresh and original every time you post (or has it all been said 100's of times before - and maybe there are only a few good ways to reframe well known almost cliched pearls of wisdom - and everyone else is frantically trying to do it).

    And ask yourself this question.

Is the world eagerly anticipating yet another copywriting blog?

    Probably not.

But businesses are desperate for an sizeable increase in sales, income and profits.

So why not use your time and resources and contact them DIRECTLY.

Telling them you have the answer to their dilemma.

I'll add to what Steve is saying:

There's MILLIONS of blogs out there, with more content than we could consume in multiple lifetimes.

That means there are also tons of hopefuls sitting behind their monitors, waiting for people to find them.

You can get ahead of them with a couple decent samples and the gumption to get out there and pursue clients directly.

    Something to consider.

Several well-known copywriters have gotten traction in the marketplace by differentiating themselves.

    How?

    By accenting their personality.

Are you a contrarian? Do you live an exciting lifestyle? Do you have some other unusual personal trait?

If so, weave that personality quirk into your blog posts.

  • Ficticious copy sounds kinda weird, so I presume you mean novel or original content.

That is a great place to start, cos like Angie said, there are MILLIONS of blogs out there, an' churnin' out content that has been round the block a few times — even if it is super tweaked — gonna fix you up with an uphill struggle.

So you gotta pull on your uniqueness of bein', tap your quirks (Go, Alex), your super specific knowledge an' resources, to feed into your novel offer to the blogosphere.

But take care first you can handle the creation of regular, quality content.

Fix regular times to blog, make sure you got half a dozen spare posts in the bag, an' intersperse commentary on hot topics with evergreen material you can throw up on social media again an' again.

Findin' the right voice or angle may take a while, an' it is surprizin' how commenters can often see better than you what is the strikin' flavor you offer.

But once you are up an' runnin', you can cut into your own groove with more finesse.

It sounds like you're using the word "blog" in a loose way. Others have already suggested that the world doesn't need yet another copywriting BLOG, but from your post I got the impression you simply meant a CMS style format for showcasing your work specifically, which would/could differ from the traditional sense of a "blog."

Anyway, re-writing bad copy vs creating fictitious copy: I think both are bad ideas.

Let's say you're a great copywriter and you set up an example of your copy (in either of the 2 ways you mentioned). You then drive traffic to your example to show off.

What happens? The potential client doesn't know if it's good copy or not. You might say it's good, but who cares what you say.

People only care about 1 thing in the end: Money.

Can you make someone more money?

Neither of your 2 strategies really answers this basic question.

Instead, prove that your copy is better than someone else's with actual data to back up your claim.

Some cause-oriented hackers recently hacked one of my websites. So I researched what they're about and then donated a large sum of money to the entity they hate the most.

The next time they hack one of my websites I'm going to donate DOUBLE.

    Hi,

you could just post a FREE service on this forum for example in the Warriors For Hire or some similar section and ask in exchange a review which you could include on your site.

    Hope I could help you!

Different approaches work for different people.

Blogging is a method that can work depending on how you do it.

The fact that there are millions of blogs out there doesn't mean that yours will get lost or not noticed.

If you're actively writing and promoting your blog via different methods like blog commenting, paid advertising, social media promotion etc. your blog or website WILL get noticed. You need to learn how to actively promote your blog.

Just this week a dream client contacted me because she said she liked my website/blog and the testimonials I had on it. For her to say that made all my efforts so worth it. This was achieved via a free method of promotion that I discovered.

Your blog can get you the results you're looking for if you use it as a portfolio piece to demonstrate your writing ability.

Clients usually ask to see some samples nowadays. If you already have some blog posts on topics that are trending and have some pre-written sales copy samples on your blog it saves time for you to have to create it in the future.

This of course is just one way to attract clients. There are plenty of others which you can experiment with. Feel free to go with a method that you feel comfortable with and that's easy for you to start with.

  • Hey I have a couple ideas that you may be interested in. What if you were to head over to clickbank and browse your specialty niche for copy you feel could be improved. Proceed to write your improved copy and offer it to the author of the content/product to use for split testing. You will get some original content to showcase and real life specs to show the increased conversions and MONEY 100% as a result of your copy.

You could also create your own mini product. Contact individuals releasing new products within your given niche and offer to include your product as a FREE bonus.(Make sure to include a dollar value to your product. On the thank you page of the product you are a bonus of have the publisher include a link to your landing page. (Landing page should be directed towards being a free bonus of an originally $27 product for example) After the customer downloads your product have it direct to an upsale, which you created the copy for of course. This will give you trackable data to prove your copy sells, get BUYERS on your list and make additional income all the while.

This process is a lot more involved then what I typed out here but I hope you get the overview of what I'm getting at.

Use your creativity. Whichever direction you decide to travel in make sure you end up with trackable results.

    Hope this helps.
