Writing successful copy...

Hi All,

I'm new to writing copy/content for customers, and in many ways I don't know where to start. I also have my own website I'm developing content for before it's made live, I have confidence in my writing abilities, however there are so many guides online that contradict one another. I found this source (http://www.affinityagency.co.uk/post/new-blog-post-1454671102) and think it's more in line with my own perspective on what should go into good content, what does everyone else think?

Dont listen to all these "gurus" (even if they are successfull, who says its because they have the holy grail method to writing?)

If there are guides that say differnt things: do what is in line with your perspective!

Thanks for your reply, The post I linked is in line with my perspective. It seems a bit dismissive to ignore all the gurus or guides that can be found online.

It is dismissive. But it does make sense in the context of knowing WHICH gurus' advice to take and who to dismiss outright.

Don't reinvent the wheel at this stage.

Find a respected, proven expert who does what you want to do. Ideally someone whose style resonates with your own. Don't ASSUME success. Research. Do your homework. Cover your OWN bases and do your due diligence.

Break down what that person does and apply it to your work. Repetitively. To the point you're dreaming about it.

THEN once you understand what made it a success and you have some success of your own, you can start tweaking and customizing that wheel, tricking it out into something unique and badass.

You always want to be the genuine YOU when you write.. that way you will appeal in an honest and real way to your followers, and are considered more trustworthy to your target audience.

What Im saying is follow your own intuition, and implement information that is in harmony with your own way of looking at things.. Then I am certain your writing will maintain unique to you, and reflect your personality in a great way.

...like Ted Kaczynski. The Harvard prodigy who wrote about his way of looking at things...his was an explosive view.

If I'm on assignment, I'm NEVER the genuine me. Content and Copywriting are purposeful, they have goals. There is a reason one gets hired to write them, and that reason is never...

      "because you are genuine".

PS It could be because "you can write in a genuine voice which the target market accepts". Or something like that.

If you want people to engage with your content or anything else just give them something useful and valuable. It's really that simple. The tricky part is figuring out what people actually want. Half the time people don't have a clue, believe it or not.

A good place to start your content creation is in the Google keyword tool. Study the searches in your niche to get a rough measure of the thinking of people in that niche. Then build out from there.

    Good luck.
