Copywriting book with exercises

Is there a good copywriting book that builds the skill step by step with plenty of drills and exercises?

If there is one, I can get my homework critiqued by an experienced copywriter.

I've read a few books on the subject and I am yet to come across one, sadly.

The mechanics of copywriting are not difficult to learn either, and most gurus will distill what they teach into formulas. A. I. D. A is one popular one.

Here's a little secret: at the heart of great copy is great writing. The formulas are just the scaffolding upon which great writing is layered.

If you want to become an excellent copywriter study and hone the art of great writing. You'll find plenty books on the subject with drills and so on.

Aside from the recommended diet of copywriting books you should read as much on the art of rhetoric as you can. And if you aren't fully versed on the subject, a light study on argumentation won't do you any harm.

    Good luck to you.

I have three learn-on-demand copywriting courses (on sales letters, press releases and copywriting generally) that proceed via assignments that you try yourself then get a discussion of the issues involved and a rewrite that you can compare with your own effort.

These may fit your learning style.

    Details at No-Hype Marketing Academy.

    Good luck,

Randy Gage's "How To Become A Copywriting Stud" is split into twelve lessons with exercises after each.

    I second Andrew's recommendation. It's a good, basic learn-copywriting book with exercises.

And having an experienced copywriter review your work will make doing them worth the effort.

  • You could also try -

The Copy Workshop Workbook by Bruce Bendinger (4th Edition).

    Available on amazon circa $47.95.

    Steve

P.S. It's aimed at creative Ad Agency copywriters - but I remember going through the 2002 edition - it was good.

The techniques and somewhat mind blowing exercises are powerful and can be applied to every aspect in the noble art of copywriting.

  • What a bargain!

    Snap it up.

P.S. It is an intensive book.

Before anyone launches their $5.00 through the interweb.

    Remember...

You must read the book and at least try the exercises - if not it isn't worth anything.

But when you give it a fair shot, I'll think you'll find you made an astonishingly great investment.

Add a few 0's onto that fiver and then some.

Thank you for the suggestions, guys. I'm going with The Copy Workshop Workbook for now. I've also started on Paul Hancox's coaching program. So I think I'm in good hands now.
