What type of music you listen to while writing, if any?

Ok, this might sound silly to some but I was just reading Gary Helbert letters and at one instance he mentions how listening to right music while writing can increase writing efficiency by 8%.
This made me curious: Do any of the warriors here listen to music while writing? If yes, does it help in any way?

PS I would love to know your favorite tracks too! (while writing, not partying :)

I just put on a genre based on what I am writing and it helps me channel in the style and target market a little more. My husband writes business plans and strategy document with blaring beats but I am more of a chilled track kinda person. Honestly, it is more about creating the 'right' environment for my writing.

None - it would be too much of a distraction because whenever there's music playing, my feet start to move and my fingers begin to snap.

Two of the best copywriters I worked with had similar styles. Dimmed lights, and one did classical music, mostly Baroque and Largo. The other did nature sounds, mostly running water, always made me want to pee.

I like to start with Meatloaf and Black Betty, then calm it down into Vivaldi until it puts me to sleep, then, to get out of alpha, Bat Out of HELL.

PS. It helps because it signals work time.

I find listening to background music improves my productivity, though recommend choosing any music without words when doing any language-based work. I quite enjoy some Ludovico Einaudi instrumentals.

  • I agree on the lacka words.

(For the music, not the writin'.)

    I figure a lyric-free chillout zone makes for a killer pre-spillout hone.

In general, I don't listen to music while I write as I find it too distracting.

That being said, I find this quite an interesting statistic so I'm now thinking that I might give it a try!

I can't see how anything with words and beats would help me in any way, shape or form so I might start with some classical piano music or something else powerful but background-y.

    Thanks for the tip!

Interesting question, I also don't listen to music cause I can’t concentrate, but I can turn it on when someone starts bothering and distracting me.

Thank you all of you for your wonderful suggestions. It seems music work well for some while distract others. BTW I also believed that music distracts writing process and then I thought maybe, its because I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO LISTEN WHILE WRITING?

However, from few days I have tried Baroque and some suggestions from GORDON -- it really is working! (Most of the times, if not every time). Thanks for your great suggestions everyone!

Most of the time, zero music. But when I do? Might sound funny, but hip-hop instrumentals. The classics.

    For me it's mellow music,

Its kinda relax my mood in doing my job, not into rock music or anything that is so upbeat

it distracts me a lot and I'm unable to think

Rock, hard rock and metal music - when I want to increase my productivity. Sometimes, I open Noisli and listen to the sounds of nature (rain, thunder, water, wind). It helps me to calm down

I write to mostly mid-tempo Jazz and easy listening type of tracks, instrumental only, vocals/words are too distracting for me to listen to. And as far as that Gary Helbert study, yes, I can believe it because music is creativity and it stimulates the right side of the brain which is more of the artsy, creative and emotional side - and that energy can flow through to your writings.

    Normally, I like silence!

But... when I feel kind of stuck, I listen to recordings with encouraging subliminal messages that have instrumental background music. One of my favorites is Paul Tuthill. Unfortunately, he no longer makes these recordings but you can still find his stuff on eBay.

I don't prefer to listen music any time while doing work.It can divide your mind in to two parts.Specially If you are listening some romantic song. You will stop working and think about the one you loved.Thats why I don't like listening to music while doing work.

I usually listen to Spotify playlists like "Autumn Acoustic","Acoustic Covers" or "Afternoon Acoustic" cause they make me concentrate on my writing while songs with words usually distract me from work.

  • I prefer silence.

    But sometimes "chanting" can help.

Not the client saying, "I want this, no that, no this, no that..."

If you have a religion chances are there is some soothing chanting on YouTube.

If you haven't listen to a few "chants" and you'll soon find out what you like.

I don't listen to music while writing something. It takes off my concentration from work because instead of writing, I sing along with the music. In rare occasions where I do listen to it, I only play upbeat songs to wake me up (or wake up my brain cells).

There is a number of music websites which provide special playlists. For example: classic music for work, morning chill, TGIF, etc.

I always listen to such music.,

I exclusively listen to movie scores while I write. Anything with words will distract from my writing and classical music is often uninspiring. Any sort of "Epic Movie Score" playlist gets me motivated for efficient and effective writing.
