A black Maserati pulled into a local burger joint in Columbus...

...at the Columbus Airport they have hangers where private jets are stored.

Take a drive on the outskirts of Columbus and you'll see some awesome houses. 5 car garages...swimming pools...

Does any of this sound like you or the way you're living?

I drive the Maserati and yes I have a private jet and a nice house.

But here's what I want to tell you.

You can have all this too if you're a copywriter.

You can start today and make things happen.

Yeah, I have my people that try and discredit me...I assume it's just jealousy. Most of them haven't earned enough to buy a cheap scooter...but it's ok. I'll do a post and they just can't wait to jump in and explain why everything I say is so wrong. They'll post everything they can think of on why I must be talking BS.

Guess what?

They'll still be trying to scrape together enough pennies next week to pay their bills.

I have a plan and I'm gonna share it with you. If you follow this plan you'll make it to the big time.

The only thing in the world that holds you back from achieving your goals is inaction.

You have to take action...and you have to start now.

The biggest reason people never achieve anything is because they NEVER START trying to achieve anything. They put together big plans on paper or in their head, then the plans never go anywhere. They have big dreams of success, but then their dreams end up only being dreams.

I don't care if you're the dumbest, most backward, ugliest, fatest, cross eyed person in the world...you CAN be wealthy.

Here's the plan:

Sit down and put your goals on paper.

1. Be specific: I will make $2500.00 by July 30, etc. Get so specific that you have no wiggle room.

2. Tomorrow morning get up and start going business to business selling yourself and what you can do for them. You're a copywriter...you can do ads, you can write their website copy...you can do newsletters, etc. You may spend the whole day and get nowhere but that's ok...you start all over again Tuesday.

3. Tuesday you may spend all day and get nowhere...but then you have Wednesday.

4. Wednesday you may spend all day going business to business and get nowhere...then you have Thursday.

Here's the thing.

You have no idea the stuff you'll learn by getting out into your community. Doors will start opening up. But here's the biggest thing, and I've discovered this from personal experience, and I'm telling you now you'll discover this too...

...almost always...the plan you started with in the beginning will never be what you end up with once things start clicking.

You may start going business to business offering to write homepages for websites...then bam...you're doing consulting or you're doing their ads, etc. Virtually in every situation when you're starting out...you'll end up where you probably least expected.

But check this out...

You will never ever ever ever understand any of what I'm saying until you start.

There's magic that happens once you just get out there and start doing stuff.

You can spend months putting together a business plan on how you're gonna do this and that and I'm telling you the whole thing gets flushed right down the crapper almost immediately once you finally decide to put it into action...things change...the plan gets redesigned...you discover this or that...a million things go wrong.

Virtually every successful person I've talked to will always tell me one of the biggest mistakes they made in business was just simply over thinking things.

Put together a simple plan...takes a few minutes...get out there tomorrow and put it into action. If your plan never works out I guarantee you...without any doubt in my mind...you'll get the right plan quickly and you'll become successful.

Just a little pep talk for those wanting to make a career by being copywriters.

Best wishes.

P.S. If your name isn't Bob or Lisa, you're a very curious person and I'm sure you will get something out of this post.

    And to think...

...if it ever got tough you could sell it like this guy.

But they couldn't be a copywriter.

    Or could they?

..now they call me Lisa at the lanes. I assume it is because like Lisa Simpson, I'm oft the smartest person in the room. Or, because I act like a cartoon character? Or, maybe, it is the 12 pound pink speckled ball which takes a minute to run down the alley until it sometimes knocks over a single pin...

whatever. At least I ain't a boy named Sue.

At 10, starting my sales career, my "mentor" (a 24 year old new insurance salesman) gave me the SECRET to success in selling...

See the people. SEE THE PEOPLE, SEE THE PEOPLE.

He said, see the people and get their FEEDBACK. Make adjustments to your "pitch". Make a sale, fine tune the pitch. Find out what your best cutomers want to hear from you...make sure you can DELIVER what you promise.

And then go see some more people, only now you can be more selective.

Thanks Max, as always, nice to hear from the voice of experience.

Hi, this is one of the best threads I have seen on WF lately. You made SUCCESS sound so simple and straight to the point. Brilliant! The most common misconception that MOST of the copywriters assume is that online companies (with horrible website copies) are not looking for us.

    Well, in reality, they are.

They just don't act. Because just like you mention; the biggest hurdle standing between our success is in inaction.

If a copy writer pitches them with a ready-made solution hitting the right pain points, they don't hesitate to act.

Copywriters need to over come this assumtion that "People are only looking for them on freealancing platforms."
    Thanks for a great share!

This is a really great post, full of inspiration, motivation and practical advice.

I completely agree with everything you said and I believe that the only reason more people aren't living to their highest potential is because they never make a start.

Perhaps they don't know where to start, but this thread gives some great tips on how to do day one. Great stuff!

I will also add one point to this post for copywriters specifically. I know how easy it is to doubt your abilities when you're in a creative industry but just always remember that not everyone can write.

They can certainly talk well and sell ice to Eskimos face to face, but writing is an inherent skill and some people, no matter how smart, just cannot do it.

Always remember that, especially when deciding on your rates!

Thanks again for a great post, Max, I really enjoyed reading it.

    Regards,
    Lisa.
