Here's a Revelation: Revelations Are Nothing New
That feeling you get when you discover some new breakthrough for you that seems to just change everything.
It's such an awesome feeling going from ignorant to enlightened.
Darkness to light.
Moron to brilliant.
Ignoramus to genius.
One of the first breakthrough revelations I can personally remember is learning how to read.
I struggled with reading for, what felt like, forever.
Then, one day in pre-k, I can remember recognizing the words in the Dr. Seuss book, "One Fish, Two Fish"
After realizing I knew what the hell I was doing and that I could actually read...I felt like a certified badass.
I think i was like the first kid in my class to be able to read.
That instantly vaunted me to nerd status, quick fast.
Being that I went to a daycare center for kids of lower income families, I'm more sure than not there were a lot of "troubled" kids that had problems going on in their lives that I hadn't previously pondered.
What that implies is that there were some pretty bad kids I was in there with.
And if you've never watched those dateline specials on low income preschools...you have no idea how bad some of these kids can be.
These were little juvenile criminals.
I'm talking straight up little thugs.
Anyways, being a reading nerd made me different.
It was a notable difference.
One I would get bullied for.
Some of the kids would see me sit there quietly reading and, of course, some of them would come over and **** with me.
They'd take away my book right in the middle of me reading it.
They'd write on the page I was looking at.
Yeah..it was bullying.
Of course, I had my fair share of fights and it would all calm down for a bit, but being the one to stand out in this sort of environment wasn't working out for me.
Though the bullying would chill, the tension was still there.
I had to figure out a way to get on the inside.
I had to figure out how to get kids to actually like me.
One day, this one older kid (maybe he was just bigger...waaayyy bigger) comes over and is like "you can read everything?"
I was like "Uh huh."
He's all: "show me how to read dis" as he's holding one of those scholastic for beginner reader books (I think it was a Thomas the train book).
Yup...at that moment, another revelation...
I knew that if I could teach that shit head to read (this kid was a freakin' monster...he probably could've whipped a teacher's ass...no problem...no joke), I'd be in.
So...guess what I started doin'?
Yeah, I started teaching kids to read.
The bully criminal kids stopped pickin on me.
Some of the little hood rat girls started diggin' me (more side story stuff for later, lol)
And you know...that was when I discovered (whenever you discover shit it's a revelation to you) figuring out how to "get on the inside" was a skill worth learning unto itself.
It's easier to influence and make changes to larger factions from the inside.
Viruses work like that.
Job ascension works like that.
Persuasion works like that.
What's the point of the story and how does this help you with copywriting stuffs?
Generally speaking, and let me know if you disagree with me, the most effective copy doesn't just sell.
It typically leads the target on a journey of discovery.
A revelation of wants...and if you're real good then it leads them to need.
When you can sneak in on the inside, become one of "them" you can be more effective at being influential and making change.
Whether that be with an individual, a collective group, an organization, a market...whatever, when you can cause others to have AHA moments, you can influence.
When you're jaded...it's because you're no longer getting AHA moments from whatever you're exposing yourself to.
People are always looking for something new and exciting.
In other words they're default setting is away from boredom.
Use that to your advantage.
Leverage that to your own gain.
What's old news to you might be the very same information that could change someone else's life....or at least get them to buy into your proposition.
Just think about how you might be able to use that information for yourself.
Was this a revelation for you or did I just discover I need to stop writing this kinda shit here?
Thanks for taking a moment to say something.
Regards,
Los
