Industries/Companies looking for Copywriters

Hi Everyone - I'm sure this is a post somewhere on here but would you be able to tell me what type of businesses/industries/niche markets are looking to hire Copywriters?

I had this idea of reaching out to a specific niche but I'm beginning to think they won't see the value of what a copywriter can do for them and how much to pay for that kind of service. This niche market I'm pursuing consists mostly of networking events and referrals that makes up a bulk of their client list.

Thanks so much!

    Hi,

In my experience, there are two categories of businesses that hire copywriters:

    1) Businesses that know they need a copywriter, and are constantly hiring.
    #Big companies.
    #Advertising companies.
    #Startups.

    2) Businesses that need a copywriter, but don't know it until you talk to them and pitch yourself.
    #Small businesses.
    #Freelancers.

Hope I helped you with your question,
    Enjoy and good luck.

Collect all the junk mail that comes to your home... Sort them by business type. After one month, you'll have a good idea.

Look at ads in the local paper. Sort them by business type. After a few issues, you'll have a good idea.

Look at ads online... Someone wrote them. That someone is the business owner or a copywriter. In either case, it's an indicator of a business that wants copy.

Look at ads in phone books... A copywriter (professional or amateur) wrote them... So, an indicator of a business that wants copywriting.

Specifically, Real Estate agents are a dream for copywriters. Constantly changing inventory (which in turn requires your continued service), excellent platform with which to showcase the difference great copy makes in piquing customer interest, and there is typically not a lot of competition in local markets.

ElSam, great idea, how you find agents that pay well? Most agents don't make a ton of money and probably wouldn't be willing to pay copywriter fees. I guess you have to find the $1million listers.

You look for sold houses with price of $2 million or more, I'd assume. In my area, the selling side gets up to 2.5% of the sale price (split between broker and agent) but at least 1%. You'd contact both broker and agent.

Lotta smack talk and not a lot of walk on here. Where are you living that RE agents don't get paid well? It doesn't take a million dollar listing to make some coin - 3% on every home sale. Do some math with all that spare time some of you apparently have. You can find busy agents at nearly any local Chamber of Commerce event. I live in SoCal, but most of the agents I worked with were in Florida. I started with one agent, rolled that into two (at the same agency no less), and eventually had a total of 7 agents that I was writing for. The key is finding busy agents - the ones out there shaking hands and closing deals, such that they don't have time for the detail work of making their listings pop. To the dork who is expecting me to wake up to a cold dose of reality - busy agents out here pay newbie agents $400 just to complete sales paperwork packages. In a small agency, a friend of mine is living comfortably just doing that - without any listings of her own. Cold indeed.

ElSamjones, thanks!! Great information! I assume you're a real estate copywriter. Do you have a link to a website with your portfolio? Thank you!

Sorry, I'll clarify. Agents do get paid well when they're busy. My sister is a real estate agent and I asked her about writing copy for the industry. She said that in her company, the assistant (or person answering phone) does that or the agent themselves. She works for Keller Williams. I've helped her with some direct mail; she's just starting out. But yeah, finding the really busy agents who don't have time to do it themselves would be key.

As a matter of fact, I live in the SF Bay Area.

If you're familiar with real estate, then you're familiar with how it's skyrocketing here.

I've worked with RE agents on selling not just homes, but multi MILLION dollar homes in the hills. And Bryan's right.

If they're already landing the million dollar listings, they've got the team in place and I'd be backup/overflow talent at best. If they're working their way up to million dollar listings, they're paying a couple hundred for flyer/brochure copy at best.

I stopped working with RE agents right about the time one told me he thought I billed too much and suggested a new working price that would have put me at about $5 an hour for my efforts.

The fact is they get paid when they sell. Everything else up until the point of selling is an expense.

Not everyone understands investment in their biz, and most RE agents' strategies consist of doing what everyone else is doing - sandwich boards, open houses, flyers, biz cards, mailed newsletters with moving tips.

They can't share commissions and most don't invest in direct response systems that could track their sale directly to my work.

So, yes it's technically possible to profitably work that angle.

Is it worth the effort? In my experience, that's a resounding no. Your mileage may vary.

    Easy answer: all of them.

Harder question(s): which one do you want to work in, and how do you find the people who hire copywriters in those industries?

First, Angie is disqualified from this game. Because she knows a few of them

I have in front me, 7 industries that hire copywriters, even rank beginners, and will offer them contracts IF they can sell stuff.

BUT, I'm not going to tell you what they are. You guess. If you get one right, I'll give a few more details about it. This way, the group benefits and we, perhaps, create a list of many companies/industries that hire even the noob copy cub.

So, any guesses? Wild stabs? These lucrative niches are Evergreen and many of these companies are decades old.

    What are they?

He has not logged on Since the day he posted this thread in November, guess we will never see him make a stab at it.

But, if anyone in the group wants to take a guess, I'll still do it.

Too bad these drive by posters just up and disappear, wait, what am I saying...

wish a few more would take a break such as __________ did recently, can't say his name or a monster comes out of the closet and posts multiple posts a day of at least 1001 words so he makes his 5 bux.

Anyhow, there are niches which copywriters ignore, mainly because no one talks about them.

Hey! Sorry for the non reply. And thanks so much for your help. I didn't think this post would get much action.

To answer your question, I'd say the weight loss, renewable energy, financial, real estate, health supplements, and information products markets just to name a few.

The type of companies who will need copywriters the most are the ones that have the most leverage riding on it. Think about it: Does a plumber or electrician filling up space on their website have *that* much leverage riding on having the BEST copy? Maybe not so much.

But... How about a company that's selling something? Could be an affiliate program, or perhaps ebook, real estate/dating advice? They have a LOT of leverage riding on it + have to pay the premium for quality.

The driving question should be "Who is selling something, and has the most riding on the quality of what I write?"

Leadgendevelop, you nailed it. Plumber and electricians wouldn't benefit from copywriting as say selling an information product or doing affiliated marketing.

Here is one that would be looking for Copywriters - The automotive Industry has niches in the aftermarket parts vs. Original Equipment put out by the Manufacturer (OEM Parts). Lots of ads are posted in the trade magazines to try and persuade the buyer to use either OEM or Aftermarket parts. Example - AC Delco brake parts by GM versus Bendix brand brake parts.
