[A Brain Teaser for Copywriters] Spin Something Old into Something New

Here's a bit of a brain teaser for all you copywriters...

Pretty much everything marketing-wise has already been written about or talked about in one way, shape, or form. One of your biggest jobs, as a copywriter, is to constantly spin old content into something fresh and new without coming across like you're plagiarizing other people's work. Some days, that's easier said than done.

So, I have a challenge for you on here. I want you to use your brain in a different way than you may have used it in the past to come up with fresh, new spins on content.

Here's the topic you have to write about: How to Improve Your Blog's SEO Using Social Media Marketing

Now, rather than jumping to the usual "tried and true" content you would use to tackle this topic matter, I want you to go at this in a completely different way. Pull out your dictionary (preferably a good, old-fashioned paper dictionary), close your eyes, open it up to a random page, and with your eyes still closed place your fingertip somewhere on that page on top of some random word. Now open your eyes. That's the word you're going to use to discuss a new way to improve your blog's SEO using social media marketing.

To clarify: you're not flipping through the dictionary several times to try to find a "relevant" word that you're familiar with. No. What you're doing is sticking with that initial random word and figuring out a new way to make it relevant to this topic matter. That's called true creativity. That's how you can spin something old into something truly new.

Okay...

So, tell me: what was your random word? Post your word here and tell me how you plan to relate it to the topic matter listed above.

It's a game to play outside your usual work, Gordon ... no deadline.

It helps by exercising a different muscle in your brain. Making you think outside the box in a completely new way. Try it. Pick a random word and then, with that word in mind, come up with a new concept for the topic suggested. Take as much time as you want.

You'll surprise yourself at what you can come up with.

Impresses me as being a huge waste of time.

The point of differentiation MUST closely align with the topic of the blog. 99.9% of the words in the English language wouldn't work.

There are some excellent techniques to find a good hook... but your method isn't one of them.

Want to help new copywriters exercise their creativity? Give them real situations.

    And.

Either my finger or my dictionary is broken.

(And the point of this would be?)

The purpose is to exercise I different part of your brain to come up with a new solution that hasn't been discussed in any other article about this topic ever before. I've got a busy couple of days ahead of me ... but I'll come back to this and get this started for you, to show you what I mean. Give me a day or two.

When Ben Settle is stuck for an idea, he takes a long, hot shower. He explains that the hot water pouring over his head stimulates the creative part of his brain and out pops LOTS of ideas.

So why sit in front of the computer pounding your head on the keyboard trying to "exercise a different part of your brain"?

        Take a shower instead.

Cool. If that works for him/you, then cool. All I'm doing is presenting yet another way to stir the creative juices in case the shower idea doesn't work for others.

I had a busy past few days. Have a couple more things to do, then I'll pull out my dictionary, find a word, and write some copy here as an example.

Okay, I had a busy weekend ... few more things to do here. Then I'll take my own advice, pull out a dictionary, find a word, and write some unique copy for you, too. (Although, I highly doubt mine will be as good as this post!) I'll be back again soon to do so.

Okay, so for the purpose of this forum, I actually used an online random word generator (https://www.slideshare.net/secret/BCkZEP1DQHPyuS) rather than a dictionary so I could prove to you it was random. It wouldn't let me choose only one word. It had to be two or more. The words are "wizard" and "horses."

(30 minutes have passed by ... this is harder than I thought. My brain hurts slightly. That shower idea is sounding better and better all the time.)

    Okay, here we go...

How to Improve Your Blog's SEO Using Social Media Marketing, Wizards, and Horses

Anyone with a blog knows the primary reason why blogging is so important is search engine optimization (SEO), which means to improve (optimize) one's standing in the organic search results on search engines like Google. You might have a fairly high search engine ranking for one or two of your primary keywords, such as your business and personal name. Blogging can help to improve your ranking for many more including some keywords you may not have considered before that will open you up to a whole new audience.

Who are you blogging for? What target market are you trying to reach? Adults or children? Male or female? What sorts of information are these individuals looking for online, other than your typical keywords, that you could intercept to bring them over to your blog?

For example, a blog that provides help, tips, and support regarding adoption can piggyback on a really prominent, instantly recognizable keyword anywhere in the world such as “Marilyn Monroe” to attract an even larger audience. Maybe the title of that particular blog entry could be: Why Marilyn Monroe Became One of the Most Successful Orphans in North America.

What about if you're writing a blog for children and their parents about Internet safety? Do these children love Disney? Perhaps The Wizard of Oz? Horses and ponies? Start blogging about these things to attract additional subscribers: There's No Place Like Home: Internet Safety Tips from The Wizard Oz and Not All Horses are Your Friend: Beware The Online Trojan Horse. Adding cartoon graphics of these images to your blog will make each post even more attractive.

Now your blog entries are written. Where do you share them? That's easy. Find out which social media sites your target market is using the most and share those blog entries there. Facebook and Twitter are safe bets for your adult readers. But what about the children? Why not try out these: Safe Chat Rooms and Social Sites for Kids.

The more creative your blog, the more readers it will appeal to. Step outside the norm. Think outside the box. That's how to improve your blog's SEO using social media marketing, wizards, and horses ... and maybe even movie stars!

How is that? Make sense? By choosing those two random words, I came up with an idea for this blog post that I may not have thought of before.

I'm thinking, You really don't know SEO.

I'm still not sold on the idea, though I know Writer's Digest (or some other publication like it) gives prompts people write stories from and a French writer some 100 years ago wrote short stories by picking 2 words which would serve as the 1st and last word of his stories... And the few stories I read were OK (made me think he didn't know SEO, either).

So, my question still remains: Why do this exercise? What beautiful beast doing it unleashed within you? (It unleashed none in the writing.).

If you need help, why not just go to something like yahoo.answers.com, type in a keyword, read what questions people have, figure out an/the answer, write such answer in the form of a post?

I know I look like I'm giving you a hard time but what I'm after is understanding the point of the exercise.

It's a way of getting there, but there are better ones. So why this one?

Copywriters, real copywriters, choose each of their words deliberately. Every word builds upon the previous.

Using random words and ideas sounds counter-productive. Especially when your goal is achieving measurable results.

As an exercise, I wouldn't get hooked on it. Not even for practice.

    Every word matters.

    My opinion, of course.

Agreed - a better exercise in choosing words wisely is the 55 word story. A few of my writer friends and I have been doing that lately as a fun way to break up all the not-so-fun stuff that comes along with running your own business.

My favorite so far - the inspiration was the word "vintage":

He breathed deeply, eyes closed, contemplating.
      "Interesting vintage," he mused.
She watched him as he sipped, swished, swallowed.
"I'm getting hints of leather and berry," he said, scouring her face for a reaction to his flavor deductions.
"Sir, if you don't mind, I need to continue with Communion."
Still, it was a damn fine wine.
It forces you to think in terms of a complete story, while making every word count. And I love trying to come up with a twist to incorporate to make the story more interesting. Not easy to do in such a tight space. But still fun!

OK, I'll give it a shot.

I've been up since 2AM working on this clients project, so I can use a little distraction right about now.

The word I just got was "rub"

Have no idea how to utilize such an obscure verb with this exercise, but I'll see what I can come up with, in my down time. (as long as this exercise doesn't "rub" me the wrong way)
    ^^^
Hey look, I'm already getting started using my word

OK, that was a fun distraction.

I spent a little over an hour on this. And while I tried to keep it more of a blog post, it did turn a little "salesy" towards the end. (I guess it's hard for me to write anything without making some kind of an offer)

Also, I didn't go back to edit it. So any typos or grammar errors you find, are yours to keep. FREE of charge . (unless you send me a helpful note pointing out said errors. In which case I'll have to charge you double for them )

So, without further ado. Using the word "rub"...

How to Improve Your Blog's SEO Using Social Media Marketing and "Rub" Technology

There's no doubt about it; When it comes to improving your blogs SEO, social media can play a huge role. Search engines love to see social media signals, indicating that your blog is useful, and popular among the social media crowd.

But the most incredible method for improving your blogs SEO is something called "Rub Technology."

Rub Technology (derived from the faux Latin term "Rubium Technologius") is quite possibly the greatest method for increasing your blogs SEO since the invention of the internet.

Rub Technology goes far beyond mere "viral" marketing. and brings your blog to the level of "world class." (possibly even "Universe" class)

Rub Technology is based on scientific studies, showing that when you use the method correctly, and someone visits your blog, your knowledge "rubs" off on them.

These small traces of knowledge stay with that person, and it influences what they share on social media. The search engines pick up on the rub, trace it back to the original source, and your blogs SEO skyrockets in the search engine listings.

In fact, rub technology is so powerful that a number of 3rd, 4th and 5th world governments are beginning to study it for use in their own propaganda campaigns.

Many books have yet to be written on how to improve your blog's SEO using social media marketing and "Rub Technology." But one thing is certain, beyond any shadow of a doubt... 100% of everyone reading this post; has now heard of "Rub Technology."

I could go on for days, making up statistics about how you can improve your blog's SEO, using social media marketing and rub technology. But the only way for you to truly understand how powerful this method is for your blog, is for you to contact me right now and let me teach you how to use it effectively.

I will take you step-by-step through the entire process of using Rub Technology and Social Media, to improve your blog's SEO.

But you must act now. This method is far too powerful for me to share it with the masses, so I'm only accepting 6 protege's. Once I reach that limit, this offer will be removed. And it may never be repeated again.

Will you be one of the lucky few who learns the secret of how to improve your blog's SEO using social media marketing and Rub Technology?
