The "Thank You" Page That Gave Me a 25% Boost In Opt-Ins

Hey,

I recently switched back to double opt-in, and was a little discouraged by the drop in retention.

And then...

I stumbled upon a warrior post about adding a "bonus" on your thank you page that people get when they confirm.

I implemented it a couple days ago and my confirmation rate went from about 40% to 65% and up.

Also...

I cut my squeeze page down to just a head line and a sub-head (from a full page of copy) and I'm now getting 5x the opt-ins I was.

Here - feel free to check out my thank you page and squeeze page.

And also, if you're doing things to make confirmation rates go even higher, let me know! I'd love to find out.

Thanks for the tip and examples. And thanks for the duh moment! Of course it would be better if I didn't give it to them after they enter their e-mail... I should wait until they confirm. Off to tweak....

        Haha good call

Then again, if you use single optin, you could probably get away with giving the info out front. Otherwise I think you're right.

@David: a heads-up... the squeeze page is showing a little wide on my screen. I'm on Chrome.

@moneykws: it should. Aweber allows you to set "thank you" pages (i.e. where you tell them about the extra bonus) as well as "confirmed opt-in" pages (i.e. where you actually provide the extra bonus).

    Hi David,

Nice idea, I always use double optin, using my own hosted autoresponder it's pays to double optin even though I have the choice.

What autoresponder do you use if you don't mind me asking?

    All the best

I have been using similar squeeze pages lately, but the thank you page idea is neat... Makes me wonder why I have not done that yet. Great tip!

@Robin - absolutely Best of luck with that!

    @monkey - Yeah - works with aweber. That's what I use.

@ghyphena - Thanks for the heads up. I'm on chrome myself and it fits. Could you tell me what resolution you're on? Thanks.

@Caville - Aw thanks I hope it helps you out a lot.

@rikfox - Aweber. And yeah, I hear ya on double opt-in.

@Kevin - Hey, haven't tested that. I'm honestly not the most tech-savvy person so I'm not sure exactly how, but if I get around to it I'll definitely let you know.

@Paul - Yeah man, it's crazy o_o. It's like, "Don't you want the friggin content!?" lol...

@JC - Yeah I know it's one of those things that you kick yourself for not doing earlier. Kudos to the warrior I got it from. I think his name is James Penn, but I could be wrong.

    That's awesome.

Funny how simple almost always works best.

I just finished creating my new thank you page with
a bonus of my own for my upcoming promotion, I
never would have thought to add "free bonus" in the
opt-in on my own if you hadn't shared it here (along
    with your example).

Thank you. Action was taken. I suggest others do
    the same.

I actually promote it on the signup page and let them know they can download as soon as they opt in.

hey thanks for the info. I still don't like double opt in though. It really does cut back on confirmed leads you can mail to. I've given up on double opt in even though it is safer. I have never once had a complaint or spam accusation.
Treat your readers like gold, and they will never cause you grief when they unsubscribe. Yes there are other issues like people entering false emails in a form,
but they won't get their information or download and they know it, so it would have to be some idiot just causing problems for that to happen.

Don't forget if you have a long track record of never having a single complaint... if aweber or get response gets a complaint they will check the IP address of the opt in, and look at your track record. If you're in the green, you won't even hear about it ! They'll know the person complaining opted in, and is just a complainer type person.

There are other issues and risks, but hey... you NEED to take some risk in business right ?
from what I've experienced... there is nothing wrong with single opt in,
and there is nothing I can see " worth " putting up with low double opt in confirm rates.

Even 65% sucks compared to 100% right ?
I say.. live on the edge ! take some risk ! be good to your list and don't worry so much !
    However that's JUST me.

but thanks for this info, if I ever decided to go back to double opt in I will definately apply this stategy.

    thanks

      Hey Jeff,

That's interesting that you see single opt-in as a risk... cause I saw switching to double opt-in as the huge risk. Less leads, but it filters out all the fake e-mail addresses people put in. I get the feeling that most of the people who don't confirm either put in an e-mail address they never use, or made one up on the spot.

I used to do the same

      David

Clear and precise texts have caught me and thanks for sharing. It's not impossible to think you've generated great results through that invention and that's what I'm talking about - an opt in and thank you page shouldn't get you anywhere but to what you really needed.

Squeeze page looks good, you mentioned you have condensed the page, have you tested condensing it more, Personally I would remove the picture and shorten the whole page to a left side and right side all within the top fold. Just my opinion.
      Hey,

Not sure how I could condense it much more. All there is is a headline and an optin box lol...

Not sure what you mean by shorten to a left side and right side all within the top fold. Isn't that what it is right now? <_<

OHH!.... I just realized what happened...

I have this thing on Google Website Optimizer. I'm currently running two squeeze pages and split testing.

One is /a1.html - the other is /a3.html.

So it randomly sent you to /a3.html which has more copy. On /a3.html there's an optin box above the fold, and below.

I was split-testing more copy with a testimonial vs. just the headline. So far the headline's winning.

This is a great idea - but don't they always say the more you give the more you receive? Most marketers will tell you they give away approximately 80% and sell the other 20%.

      Hi David,

Thanks for sharing this. It's really brilliant.

It was also nice to hear you say that your original confirmation rates for 40%. I have had this problem on my site for ages, and I thought it was just me!
I still can't understand why people would sign up and then not confirm?? It's bizarre..

I'm going to try this out and let you know how it works.

Thanks again, for providing a specific example.

    Hi David,

Really nice and strong opt in page... I like it.

It's very friendly. And the CD image balances it well.

Just wondering if you have any thoughts or have experimented
on the wording/copy for slide in forms or pop up forms? (The
type of form one might setup to collect customers at a sales
    page for example).

Be good to know your thoughts on that.

    Thanks

I did something similar with my profitable-niche net site. However, I also included another bonus offer on the opt in email if the recipient refers two colleagues. The result is an opt-in list with higher conversion and a good number of referrals.
