you know your influence is starting to spread when...

Somebody sent me a link in reply to one of my emails today for
some money-pyramid type thing. I checked it out and found
a recent email I sent to my list, sliced and pasted right onto
the page as their "sales copy".

To me, the email was one in a long line of "disposables".... but
I guess I should be flattered that somebody liked it enough
to rip it off.

I've seen my copy plagiarized here and there but I don't think
I've ever had somebody send me a link straight to one.

A swipe is fine and dandy...

...but flat out copying and pasting
    is pure, unadulterated THIEVERY.

In a former life, way back in the mid-90's
when the web was still very much full of
    "brochure-ware"...

One of our primary competitors literally
lifted, word for word, the entire copy from
    our 8.5 X 11 sell sheet brochure...

The front was a full color image with a
branding message and the back was all
copy - what we offer, what we do not offer.

They literally stole my copy word for word
and put THAT up as THEIR web copy.

It remains an example of one of the single
most boneheaded business moves I've ever
seen - and we beat the living stuffing out
of them in the marketplace for a good
    decade afterwards...

I never missed an opportunity to point that
out to prospects who asked "what about
    company x...?"

"Oh.. THOSE guys... Let me tell you a little
story about how those guys operate..."

    FTW.
