Joe Vitale: A Great Copywiter

Joe Vitalie is supposed to be a great copywriter. Although I don't, personally, like his style, I have to agree that he is persuasive. What do you think of Vitale's copywriting skills?

Joe Vitale specializes in hypnotic copy and you will find that he his copy is more tailor made for the emotional buyers who are impulsive. He is a master in his own right and has been marketing with the likes of Mark Joyner.

I have studied Joe's stuff for a long time now and create hypnotic sales letter and autoresponder content and I must say they work pretty darn well. Joe pretty much adopts a similar stance like most of the big guys, especially Eben - they prime their prospect's well with the sideway sales letter and then and only THEN - push them for a sale.

Unless your Dan Kennedy or Halbert - I'll say you can lean a lot from Joe

I agree - Joe is one of the greatest copywriters that ever lived! He is wonderful to study and learn from - a great personality who likes to help others.

IMO, if you ever do the hand-copying style of studying copywriting (and you should be doing this frequently, regardless of your level of experience), you can't go wrong by copying any of Joe's advertisements.

This man is a master! And he does not mis-use the considerable power inherent in the words he uses. An ethical, powerful copywriter who cares - talk about a recipe for greatness!

        Guys, honestly studying Joe's letters...

I'm not sure Joe has written a word of his own copy in ages.

He's got people ghosting for him.

        It's not worth his time.

The style's just not the same.

Yeah... stuff like this really shows off his ethical side:

Your Secret Russian Wish Maker - From Dr. Joe Vitale and Pat O'Bryan

I haven't read enough of his copy to be able to make a judgement on that. I remember reading a little and hating it... but I don't even know if it's really his or just a ghostwriter.

        But ethical? Caring?

Not the words I'd use to describe him...

"Dr" Joe Vitale ??? Is there such a thing as Dr of "legend in your own mind" ?

I didn't care for his style either but maybe I'm just not the type to be "hypnotized" easily:rolleyes:

I think the problem that I have with Joe is he's such an unabashed salesman. His personality turns me off more than his copywriting, but his copywriting can be pretty over the top, I think.

He may be 'wonderful to learn from', that I don't know....But, calling him one of the greatest copywriters that ever lived is quite a stretch, imo.

I read his book, Hypnotic Writing. In fact, I bought it. It was a huge bore, and I learned next to nothing.

On the flip side, I read Tested Advertising Methods by Caples, and it changed the way I looked at ads.

Ogilvy's On Advertising also caused a similar paradigm shift.

    Claude Hopkins

    Joe Sugarman

    Gene Schwartz

I'm sorry, but Vitale doesn't touch these folks. He doesn't even lick the plate they ate off of. These guys were/are kings, emperors, gods of the Advertising World. After all of these greats, I bring in the guns of Bly and Halbert, with the occasional nugget of wisdom from living legends like Clayton Makepeace and Gary Bencivenga.

If you're still looking for something or someone "better" by the time you're done reading even 25% of what these geniuses gave us... read the next 75%.

Second that. Probably one of the best...if not the best
      book on copywriting and advertising.

Legends like David Ogilvy and Rosser Reeves themselves
were hugely influenced by John Caples.

    I agree he's not world-class.

And ethics is a big deal to me. I don't know if he wrote the letter that Dan linked to, but I don't think it's good at all. Despite the product.

After all, what's a secret magic genie worth?
I'd say about $39 from the average sucker... Err... Customer. But he only grants one wish at a time, so if you need $20 Million AND a trophy wife, you'd better buy two.

I think a lot of the products he's related to are snake oil.

The names listed by Omar in the thread above, the vast majority of products they promoted (If not ALL of them) were valuable.

I recently bought his book about hypnotic writing and, if nothing else, the style of his writing is very readable. He seems to take a rather boring subject and makes it a pretty enjoyable and positive read.

Maybe he hypnotized me into liking his writing! lol

Exactly. Good writing is hypnotic. It pulls you along. That may be the most useful lesson of the book.

But if you really want to learn how to get people onto that proverbial "greased slide"...Joe Sugarman's books are amazing.

  • Joe may not be a world beater, but he's got some serious copywriting skills.

And personally, I like Hypnotic Writing. It's a solid book and while it's not on the level of some of the classics, it's worth owning. And even Joe's ghost-written letters are light-years ahead of what 99% of direct response copywriters can turn out.

So what if he's not "ethical"? I've learned plenty of useful stuff from less-than-ethical teachers. I didn't look to them for moral guidance. I took what was useful and left the rest.

Hmmm...now that I think about it, the most useful things I've ever learned have been from guys who have spent a fair amount of time of the wrong side of the prison wall.
