Where to place call to action button?

All,

This is my first post here, so excuse me if this is in the wrong forum.

I've created a new web site called Military Tips (militarytips.net). My main "call to action" is to

a) get military members to submit advice to the site

but more importantly:

b) get businesses to purchase an article offering advice, but also featuring their business (contact info, etc)

I'm tempted to place a big call to action button in the top of the left nav menu. I've also thought about making a new "feature area" in the top-middle of the home page telling people why they should write for Military Tips.

What's your advice? Will I sacrifice content if I place a feature box in the middle of the home page? Is the top left corner of the page a good place for call to action?

Thanks,
Casey

    Hi Casey,

My advice is to always test. I always believe in keeping things simple and neat. Put the main call to action/headline in the center and if you are using a lot of copy - have a couple of opt-in boxes. If you are using video or just a couple of headlines to squeeze, then you want to really HIT home with the headline to make sure it converts.

Why dont you get a squeeze page draft up and then it will be easier for other warriors to critique. If you need my help - send me an email.

There is no exact science in this.

As far as it goes for email marketing, you should have three CTA.

The first one goes almost just below the headline.

The second is after the body copy.

And the third comes in the end, at the PS or after the salutation.

But that works for email marketing. For squeeze pages, you can try two CTA.

One above the fold (because most people will never scroll down) and one at the end of the page (after the body text).

So you'll have an impulse opt-in or you'll educate your prospect.

    Hello,

Thanks for your replies. Once I get my landing page completed I'll put it up here for review. I would really appreciate that. Right now it's still in draft form but I hope to have it done in a week.

    Thanks,
    Casey

    Casey,

Why not just put a button and call to action in the upper right hand corner under the header? If I'm understanding you, this particular button is to collect email addresses of businesses that you want to give information to and also sell to. If that's correct, then set it up like a squeeze page offer on a home page (in the upper right hand corner).

    Todd,

My call to action will go straight to a sales page. Is that bad?

    Thanks,
    Casey
