Do you find yourself using copywriting techniques outside the realm of copy?

I have found that studying copy has increased my overall ability to communicate effectively. (I think the fact I've always been a good communicator is the explanation for my "knack" for copy).

For example the other day I had a meeting with my pastor. My girlfriend had some minor church duties to fulfill during my meeting. My meeting was finished slightly before she was done. She told me "I'll be done in five minutes." So rather than lurk over her for the remainder of the time I decided to put myself to good use and find someone to help.

I found some volunteers sorting food for the upcoming food bank dinner. and I said...

"I've got two hands and five minutes. What can I help you with?"

It was essentially a headline in real life. A "Bam-This-Is-What's-Up" crystal clear statement.

Needless to say I spent 5 minutes sorting bread.

But I was wondering if any of you have had any experience like this? Where your knowledge of copy has made you a better communicator in your day to day life.

    Yes, frequently.

The other day, for example, a friend was filling out a job application. I explained to her how specifics would make her claims more believable.

    Stuff like that.

Spent a number of years in a high profile political office.....

A TV news article lasts about one minute...unless it is extreme.....
You get about ten or fifteen seconds of your voice and face on screen...
    If you speak a headline....

Same goes with the front page of the newspaper....

Once made a comment at a public meeting about a high ranking official..
"If he worked for me I would fire him."
Front page for almost a week....several editorials and many letters to the editor...

In politics you want coverage...free advertising....
