How to score big fish clients

Hi Friends,

I've just posted a new interview on my blog

FREELANCERS: How to attract more clients

It's with Chris Haddad and we talk in-depth about the methods we use to cozy up to big fish marketers at live events -- without coming off (or feeling) smarmy about it.

The trick is to never go in looking for a "sale"...

... which may seem obvious to the more savvy networkers here, but it's a lesson too many of us (especially socially awkward writer types) have to learn the hard way by embarrassing ourselves.

I know I did at my first event. I'll never forget what a tool I felt like after forcing myself to approach a well-known marketer and shoving my samples at him.

Worst part was he tried to be cool about it, but because I felt like such a rube, I basically apologized and sauntered away like a dejected teenager. Still makes me twitch thinking about it.

But... sometimes the only way to learn is to crash and burn on your first flight.

if I hadn't suffered that failure, then I would not have (after vowing never to put myself -- or anyone I hoped to do business with -- through THAT again) discovered that foregoing my desired outcome and just being myself is a much more effective method for connecting with important people.

In fact, it's the only way I know that works.

After shedding my desperation and gaining more confidence I was able to network much more effectively -- and make some great friendships along the way.

I even got up the cajones to "invite myself" to a private Carlton event, which he shockingly accepted, and which provided a major turning point in my life and career.

In fact, another person I met at that same event recently surprised me with a strong recommendation to a famous marketer and we just booked a high five figure deal.

I tell you this so you'll understand the value of the advice in this interview... and hopefully use it to get in front of the right people. The kind who will appreciate your talent and tenacity and, of course, reward you accordingly.

Give a listen and let us know what you think.

Best,

Kevin

I'm bumping this thread and I don't care who knows it. Balls = Money and all that.

Great interview Kevin. Always loved Chris' copy... especially his promo site... and it turns out he's pretty funny too!

You guys covered, in entertaining fashion, and sometimes using craven and saucy language, essential ground for anyone wanting to get their inner-game right when it comes to reaping rewards from networking events and networking in general. Valuable take-aways throughout.

This call was great. The last call was great.

    EVERY frickin' call is great.

    +1, amigo.

      Thanks gents. You're too kind.

I'm laughing at your back and forth at the blog, too. Sounds like about hour 3 if Sterling and Price trapped in an elevator.

    Kevin,

I listened to the interview last night 'cause of the email you sent out.
For me it was time well spent. It reinforced the idea that business really IS
all about relationships. The latest techniques will come and go but will
never replace face to face interaction.

Also I think we all like (love) rags-to-riches stories in all their forms. And even though Chris only hinted at his, it was still inspiring.

Sometimes I wonder if there is room for another highly paid copywriter out
there, but then something like this interview comes along and blows that thought
out the window like stale air.

    Thanks gents,

    Eric

Eric, there's not only "room" for highly paid (read: high skilled, results-getting) copywriters, there is a massive void in the market.

I'm nearly out of pros I trust to recommend. If there are writers out there with the skill and experience to handle big jobs for big fish, then by all means make yourself known.

No one has the time to go looking for you, you've got to make sure you get noticed.

And if you're on the verge of claiming the confidence and experience you need to take on big projects, find a way to get over the hump -- fast.

You may be wasting away your future.

Really enjoyed it Kevin and Chris. Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun while still delivering the good stuff.

(I must say I was a bit disappointed learning the law of attraction doesn't result
in any extra big finned clients after putting so much stock in it religiously and that you weren't willing to accept a Bill-ticket for solving world poverty, but you got to hold out for the big fish, so I understand. Kidding!)

        Cool interview, thx.

        @Ross - speaking of balls...
This happened in Dublin a few days ago.

Yes, the guy's committed a 'crime' but check out the copy near the end of the 4 min clip.

There are Irish people in a world of hurt and those words strongly resonate with folks who see their country drowning in debt and death by a thousand cuts, all to save a few big banks... while Iceland raised a middle finger to financial titans and is now getting back on her feet again.

    its pretty simple....
    1. go to seminars
    2. hang out , just be cool and meet people
    3. keep in touch with them

the end result? you'll not only ahave a network of marketers/FRIENDS, you'll make bank.

    Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the story. I know how hard it is tell "fess-up" and admit such things we all do that we cringe to remember.

The good news for me is it seems I have a vast repertoire of those moments week in and week out to choose from - so I really get used to tasting my foot. (Note - FAR better to remove socks first. And my red cheeks also help give me a healthy "glow" year-round so it's a plus there.)

Certainly keeps me humble. Your story just resonated with me. It was cool to know you've done that.

At least now I admit I only know almost everything.

EDIT: By the way, my name is Nathan, and I have a way to earn you a billion dollars with my math skills. Oh wait, someone beat me to it.
