Jay Abraham School of Copywriting

Mal pointed me to this, and I just wanted to throw him a nod for that, because it's definitely gold. Very easy way to get a metric ton of headline and copy ideas that are coming straight from the market itself.

Great bits about empathy and polarization, too. Useful video. Makes me want to send a thank you note to Amazon for spending millions to generate free ideas for me. Very kind of them.

    • So, the reiterate, his technique is to steal headlines and comments and then apply the bleeding obvious....very odd "expert" in my opinion....

I am concerned that this ignores both marketing and engagement principles so it's a formula for creating spam copy - the kind you see on medical products and self help stuff (he even used weight loss as the example). As far as marketing goes, it's great market research, reading what people say about your competitors... but does it actually say anything about your own product?
It doesn't apply point of difference as the underlying motivator for the copy
It encourages you to use competitor's benefits.
It doesn't take target audience into account
It encourages formulaic and non-brand specific writing - which in my experience tells the reader to use the industry, not the product - so it's advertising for a competitor.

I can see how it's a good option for free market research - and if "the internet" is your customer than that's great for you - your keywords are going to be real easy to find - but in reality, the Internet is not your target market and so I don't see how this can be the best advice.

It's also not very engaging and it doesn't account for voice.

Online marketing is about engagement and all this will produce is a series of dot points telling you what you want.

Anyway, I know that weight loss and sexual dysfunction and depression and anything where the person is both embarrassed and unhappy is a competitive industry and that these hard sell copy techniques are necessary to out-shout all the other noise but in my opinion, it's better to find the right product for the audience, get them talking about it and use copy to help them understand why they need it specifically.

I will use this technique as market research but I also believe in saying something original....not applying a plagerised formula.

          He's a total joke.

I mean, seriously... His name is "Jay" Abraham? Plz.

Forget all that "made millions, taken companies from $4 million to 140 in no time..." Baloney.

...But seriously, Jay is a sharp guy. When he speaks, thou should listen.

But I've heard from more than 1 source that he is kind of intolerably arrogant in person. Ah well.

          Cheers,

          Angel

Maybe Jay is not arrogant but 'Right' most of the time since hes been there and done that better than anyone else has, or ever thought of doing - simply because his thinking is so strategic. - When people are right and know their stuff they can be seen by others as being strong willed, simply because they know what works and what wont, and will not waste their time or yours.

Every bit of his work Ive looked into - he has come across as humble almost to a fault. every interaction with his audience or with people, and since I'm studying his philosophy I would daresay arrogance would not be one of his principles.

I bought a copy of his classic 'stealth marketing' recently darn it was hard to find.

            Kind Regards
            Brian
