Copyleft is a use of copyright law to make a work free (available at no cost) and to ensure that all future derivatives of that work will also remain free. This is in contrast, for example to work which is in the public domain (free and publicly available) but that does not have the requirement that derivatives remain free.

So, I can legally take copyleft material and use it but have some restrictions on what I do with it (e.g. I can't resell it). On the other hand I could sell public domain material.

    I hope that helps.

Disclaimer: Despite my father being an attorney, I just knew law school classes would put me to sleep.
