4 Approaches to Copywriting (Great for Beginners)

This is an excerpt from an article on my website about the psychology of sales. I thought this information would be helpful to young copywriters or those who are new to the business.

The Reciprocation Approach
To be an effective copywriter, it is important that you first understand what the psychology of sales is all about. For example, most copywriters support giving an item away for free during the initial contact. This could be something as simple as an eBook, sample pack, brochure, or some other type of value-adding collateral. It doesn't matter what it is, as long at has perceived value to the prospect. In most cases, after receiving a free gift, the prospect will like, trust, and respect the company more thus increasing the likelihood that he or she will purchase a product. Plus, it's a great way to capture contact information for your leads database.

The Scarcity Approach
A copywriter's secret weapon is often actual or perceived product scarcity. Why does this work? Because if a customer decides not to "purchase now" they could risk missing out on an opportunity completely. This method works for almost every type of product imaginable. You've probably seen those tv commercials with "count down timers" or heard radio ads that say, "we only have a limited number of free samples available so call now..." Why do you think hordes of people wait in line on Black Friday for "limited" deals on the hottest products? This approach works well and generates an immediate response.
