HELP! PLEASE - guide for basic sales copy

I've been working on a website and I'm almost done with it. It's currently on my local machine and I'm desperate to roll it out.

It's a small mini-site dedicated to selling a single accessory product that I will produce that has SEASONAL demand for about 2 months for gaming.

I'm finished except for the sales copy on my main home page, purchase page, and infusing sales copy links on the side bar of the other pages such as about us, blog, etc..

Is there a good guideline anywhere for what to include in the sales copy for my main page and purchase page. Such as title, etc..???

Thanks for any direction or assistance. I want to roll this out in the next 2 days so I can start testing and tweaking.

Thanks in advance,

Zeif

I might add... someone asked me today if I was done.. and I told them 80%. Then corrected myself and said, you know.. after reevaluating this seems like the most important.. so perhaps, I should say 20%.

You've given yourself the final 2 days to complete the most important aspect of your business and you don't know even the most basic essentials about the subject in question?

I'm not an expert... I'm learning and was looking for a starting point. I need to publish the site so that I can start testing my copy. I simply need a starting point.

Why don't you start looking at the sales copy in the WSO section? That will give you some great ideas for sales copy and what to have in it!

Thanks Jason.. I've been scouring the web looking for a few good examples. That's a very concentrated view. I'm still navigating my way around here.. and appreciate you taking the time to nudge me in a direction.

Is there not a general newb guide?

Haha... you could be correct. However, I've investigated the niche for over 3 years. The parked pages have made me a few hundred dollars a year.

There is established demand and the exact 2 domains I own ( hand registered ) made the previous owner with back-links already established 15K - 30K a year. My website is already better than the previous owner (per wayback machine) and there are 2 competitors. The top competitor makes 300K and my website pre-launch is better from a web 2.0 view. I have to compete in my sales copy, back-links, and seo. Getting it up is a priority because the buying season just started.

What I learn from getting it up will be invaluable. Yes, I'm a bit optimistic. And yes I understand what you're saying. In this case and even in 99.9% of all cases I would agree.

Okay, first think in terms of the people who want your product. You must know who they are, how they think, where and how they might spend their money. After all, you're looking to sell to them. If you're not already inside their heads, your screwed.

Now think of what your product will to for them. Will it make them a better gamer? Will it make them a hotshot in their circle of gamer friends? I have no idea what you're offering so this is pretty generic stuff I'm throwing out.

Once you know who your prospects are and what their emotional hot buttons are it isn't that hard to sell them, even if you're just starting out. I say this because judging by your post, you've done a decent job of expressing what you want here. In other words, your writing seems to be okay.

Then you go with the problem/solution theme. I don't know what kind of problems gamers have with gaming. If we're talking about an online gaming community, maybe being a loser all the time in the eyes of their peers is a problem. Maybe your widget can solve that. So that might be your appeal. Something like. When It Comes To Duke Nukem I Don't Get No Respect! (I know, I'm dating myself here but I hear Duke is making a comeback)

Yeah, borrowed from ole Rodney, rest his soul. From there you develop that by relating your own experience to the particular game in question and say something like, I never got any respect on... whatever the gaming platform is. Everyone laughed at me because I always came in dead-ass last. But that all changed when I downloaded... your widget. Then tell them about the widget and what it did for you and how it's going to make them a stud.

I'm shooting in the dark here but that format can kick butt. I once wrote a pre-sell landing page for some atomic gaming mouse for a guy. I used something like what I've just described and his click rate went through the roof resulting in a HUGE increase in sales of the mouse thingy. Good luck.

Actually the product is an add on for a genre that has a fanatical following. There's always been some money in it, but most adults would not take the opportunity very seriously. I know my competitor makes 300Kish for sure, but there seem to be a few pressures and risks. I also know my websites used to make a young kid that abandoned it 15-30K a year.

Thank you for the long and thought out post. I'm going to use copy similar to that in one of my split tests.

Get a good basic copywriting book. The great ones are in the sticky called "Top Copywriting books" Your first efforts may not be earth-shattering but at least you will be going in the right direction.

A couple of things. First, look around for a free or super cheap e-book called "Sales Letters for Dummies" - it was given away with Resell Rights for a long time and is a great foundational and structural primer.

There's also a tutorial reposted on a lot of blogs by David Frey called the 12 Step Foolproof Sales letter. I like that one, too.

My own custom template is based off those (among others) but you've got to start somewhere and both of those will give you good idea of the logic/emotional balance and a list of all the bits you want to be sure to have.

    Hope it helps!

Fair warning: It's possible I'm arguing with you because I have nothing better to do.

Get a copy of Dan Kennedy's The Ultimate Sales Letter and Dan Furman's Do the Web Write. These are great books for novice copywriters.

A great resource is Jason Fladian's "Stop Watch Copy Writing" course. Jason is a great teacher and he gives you the structure to follow so you can begin cranking out great copy.
