Inappropriate EMail Subject Line

Hey Guys,

I just got an email and the Subject was:

Jack, Two Friends Of Mine Died Yesterday... I am ready
to STEP UP - You ?

He then proceeded to talk about his two friends that were
killed in a Plane crash yesterday and how he was going to step
up his game and help me do the same .. followed by a Sales pitch

I just thought it was kind of Inappropriate

What do you think?

Jack

Wowwwww... Extremely sad thing to resort to in order to get money. Some people...

I mean, I've gotten an email pitch where someone referenced their deceased father and used it as leverage to sell something... so I have seen some pretty pathetic sales pitches, but this one is bad.

Unsubscribe! No one who loses two friends is going to be on the Internet the very next day trying to peddle some gear. What a pathetic waste of inbox space that person is.

I'm not on that list, but I think I know who you're talking about. (C.R.?) If it's the person I'm thinking about, he mentioned the plane crash on Facebook last night. Either way, I think it was done in poor taste.

P.S. Just followed you on Twitter Jack.

Definitely inappropriate in that context, whether it's true or not. I'd say he lost some creditability with that one. Now if it is true and he used that email to tell his list that he'd be out of touch for a bit dealing with his grief then that would have been acceptable as well as increasing his creditability.

My goldfish died a few months ago.. talk about a lost opportunity.

But it could be his way of dealing with the grief., or the realisation that life is short and we gotta go for it.

I'd like to think that it is genuine, I know I've re-evaluated my life/business when tragic things have happened in my life.

    If it's just a marketing trick - it's sick.

I think it would be more genuine if there wasn't a sales pitch in the email, and it was just a personal note reflecting about how life is short, etc.

Yeah, I can totally understand that. But do it by yourself and don't broadcast it to the world and then throw in a sales pitch - that is just low. I wonder what the families of the people who were killed would think about it...? It's a very personal time and not one that should be taken advantage of no matter how good he thinks his intentions are.

Yeah totally inappropriate. Even if it really happened it's just tragic to use it for marketing purposes.

Terrible. Wholly inappropriate. Distasteful in the extreme. And completely uncalled for.

The guy obviously lacks the ability to put himself in someone else's shoes.

Plain and simply put... he lacks respect. For anyone. Including himself.

I agree Jack. The only thing I can see is he is using his death to step up his "game to getting it done!"

I think it sucks. I got one from some smartass yesterday saying: Notification of payment received. That's the very line PayPal uses when you make a sale. So I thought I'd made a sale and opened it to find a cheesy offer from a cheesy marketer.

But I did take action. 1. Unsubscribe. 2. Send to junk folder.

Yes, I must admit I've had several of them and I did the same thing. I think tactics like this are just plain silly because the second marketers pull something out of the bag like that, they lose their credibility.

And leveraging the death of your friends to make money ???

What on Earth is the world coming to? They obviously didn't lose anyone they truly cared about then.

      Unbelievable and tasteless at best.

It really doesn't matter what I think.

I know who you are talking about. They were friends. They were hard working, super aggressive marketers, but I'd bet dollars to donuts THEY would never approve.

Whether its appropriate or not, I guess will depend on the recipient.

However, my guess is, it may have gotten a good open rate, but ultimately a poor
    sales rate.

That to me is the most terrible and desperate act to sell something. There are a zillion ways to do it but to bank on the death of his friends... whew!
