Hello Warriors.

So is there a difference between online and offline copywriting?

      Hi Jon,

Persuasion principles are the same whether you're selling online or offline.

What differs, in some cases, are the tactics.

I think the MAIN difference between online and offline is simply keeping your readers interested.

In offline, your copy MUST be interesting or your prospect will simply throw it away.

Online I think you have slightly more leeway when you put in "interaction" devices such as quizzes, having them check boxes, etc.

But as the person above me said..the persuasion tactics are pretty much the same.

          Hey, Jon -

          Yes, no, and maybe...

As smarter people than me have said, "Good direct response writing is salesmanship in print."

Yes, it is different because the medium is different.

No, it's not different because the desired outcome is the same.

And, maybe it is different because of the leeway you have in presentation.

That said, any direct response piece has a single goal, which is to get the reader to complete the call to action [respond,] whatever that response should be.

Yes, there are some big differences in the style of writing between on-line copy and direct mail copy.

The general outline for both remains roughly the same. The general theory remains the same - big promise, big picture, guarantee, proof, etc.

On-line copy must have short sentences and short paragraphs. Sub-heads are much more vital on-line. Same for bulleted lists, images, etc. Nothing is harder on computer-screen-reading eyes than chunks of unbroken text.

Hard-copy, as in direct mail, has a lot more leeway visually. Longer paragraphs are okay, graphics can be used much more sparingly [although they are still vital], and general layout is a lot more flexible.

            Hope this helps,

How about the font size, multi color highlight, etc.?

Can you have a longer sales letter in offline than online?

              Thanks!

There is a HUGE difference between effective direct mail and online copywriting. Direct mail may be limited to printed copy with color and graphics, but online copywriting effects are virtually unlimited by adding video, graphics and sound. The more senses that you can involve with your prospect, the stronger your sales pitch will be. Print media is limited in involving the prospect.
