Newbie request for Site Review

Hi Everyone,

I'm very new to all this, but quite excited about the prospect of making real money online.

A number of months ago, I put in a *lot* of effort to create a tinnitus website around an apparently poorly chosen keyword "Maskers for tinnitus".

It seems to me that it should be a "buying keyword", but it just doesn't get as much traffic as I was expecting. (I've since learned how to do better keyword research!)

I only get about 10-20 people per day visiting the site, but I've only made one sale of a tinnitus masker in approximately 2000 visits.

Could you folks take a look at the site and offer some suggestions on how I can actually make a sale?

If I could get this site converting at even 1% I'd be the start of something really magical for me!

My website is http://maskersfortinnitus.com

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your speedy and detailed suggestions, Ken!

(I don't have enough posts to send a private reply)

I'm in a tricky spot: Too new to IM to know what works, and too close to the site to see whats wrong!

Your suggestions will be very helpful!

    Hey TinPete,

Hmmm... this looks like a sniper site to me.

AWESOME job with that bigger link in your right sidebar Pete.

The classic upside-down triangle. Great technique to use for headlines
and sub-headlines... keeps the readers eyes moving down.

"This central idea of homeopathy might at first sound ridiculous"

I like that little section there... as you're dealing with an objection fairly
early on. Reader lands on your site, thinks the whole things sounds
far-fetched, and BOOM: you take care of that right away.

When I look at your "Healthy Life - Next Exit" image... I'm thinkin'
you're on the right track... but is tinnitus usually associated with
a lack of health, or sickness/disease?

It's a ringing in the ears, right?

    Sure, it's a health-related problem... but a person could lead a
healthy life and still have ringing in their ears.

Maybe you could search for an image that would attack how
annoying tinnitus can be. I'd imagine it's annoying as hell.

    Couple more suggestions:

Use that inverted triangle technique I mentioned earlier with your sub-headlines
that you've got spaced out on your main post.

First line always being the widest... and getting more and more narrow on the
second and third line (if you've got to use a third).

That'll get your readers' eyes moving down the page right away as they come
across another sub-heading... and that brings me to my last idea:

The post on your front page is pretty well spaced out as it is... but I think it
    could be better.

Use short, chopped sentences (heck, *incomplete* sentences) at the very
beginning... and then, as a general rule of thumb... break everything up so
your readers don't have to read more than 2 or 3 lines at a time.

That's what I can rattle off the top of my head...

...and if you've got any questions Pete, don't hesitate to ask.

    Get that baby makin' sales!

    Good luck,

    Jake

      Hi Pete,

Well for someone who is "very new to all this" you need to pat yourself on the back!

The site is an excellent start for your first project.

Jake has done an excellent job covering all the 'how the site should look' stuff, and to be honest there's nothing I can add there, other than you need to make sure your 'home' link remains in your navigation bar all the time.

We all know that clicking the site name in a wordpress site will take you home, but just assume that the world hasn't got a clue about anything and then everybody will be able to navigate your site.

      ====

      *Posts*

Pete, some of your blog posts are far too long.

I know you have used PLR articles (and have cleverly thought to include contextual links - well done) but putting three related articles into one post is not the best way to go about it, as there's just far too much to read in one go.

      My suggestion?

Use Categories. Add a category called "Homeopathic Tinnitus Remedies" and then add the three articles as separate posts in that category.

The posts will then be easier to read, and the site will also have 'more' posts.

      ====

      *Dates*

Pete, it would be best to remove the date from your posts. As they are just articles, and not real blog posts, your site will 'date' very quickly. People want up to the minute info, and your site is already a month out of date!! Your last post was October 5th and the previous one was TWO whole months before that, so readers will think the site is neglected and won't have anything currently relevant to their needs. (You'll need to edit one of the wordpress files which you'll probably wont have a clue about so I'll happily do this for you if you don't know how - takes about 15secs, lol.)

      ====

*Okay, lets get to the money!*

Well done on using ClickBank right off the bat. Most Newbies go for Adsense or Amazon, but you've worked out that 50% commission is way better that %10! Well Done.

Here some idea's for you that will up the income significantly.

      1. Consider Your Niche.

At present you are positioning yourself in the micro-micro-micro-niche of "Tinnitus Maskers", and indeed at present, only one of them.

You have one (very good) site to promote one main product, and although an excellent start I think you'll be severely limiting your massive potential for multiple income streams from this one site.

I suggest you broaden your niche to 'Tinnitus', then you can cover may other tinnitus related issues, and your articles like "Homeopathic Tinnitus Remedies" won't seem 'out of place' as they currently do.

I love how you are coming at this from a very PERSONAL perspective, and that's what you can really capitlize on. So many Newbies just knock out crap 'dog' sites who don't even own a dog!

      2. Create a list of Information Seekers.

Your story is personal, and people like to read stuff about how other people have dealt with personal issues. Now you and I both know that Tinnitus is the medical word for "Ringing in the Ears" (I have various ear problems too), but there will be others that don't. And you can help them to understand. They can read that you have the same problem as them, they'll connect with you, and if you build uop a realtionship with them and come across as an 'authority' on tinnitus, then they will buy stuff that you recommend, and believe me, they will keep buying!!!

But to sell stuff to these people, you need too things. Their Name and their Email Address.
Here's what I suggets, other than a quick intro like the profile bit in the side bar, remove ALL your 'personal' writing from the site, and literally just leave the articles.

      -- What?!?!?!

Yes I can hear you screaming! But listen, that personal stuff is valuable and shouldn't be there. Why? Cause most of your vistors wont get to read it! They will skim and move on, and the important stuff you want to tell them will get missed.

Now, put all of that personal stuff into 'Word', and add to it, write up your story, from the beginning - what was it like for you when the ringing first started? How did it effect you? Were you concerned? Worried? What about your family? Your friends? Did it affect your enjoyment of life?

Then continue your story with what you did about it. How did you solve that problem? Remember there will be people on the internet who are embarrassed about this annoying ringing sound in their ears and are embarrassed to mention it. Talk about the things you tried and whats out there to help others (include contextual links too)

Finish off with a summary, how you feel now, how much better your life is, and that you were spurred on to create a website to help others suffering as you did.

Finally add a list of resources including your website, and of course links to other products and services - most of which should be affiliate links, but do include others like government health info type sites, help groups etc, if you know of any, or can find any on the web. Obviously you don't really want to link to sites doing the same as you, since they'll grab your potential customer from you!!!

Oh and lastly ENCOURAGE the reader to share the report with others, ask them to email it to a friend or relative that may be suffering too. (say this first and last)

You have a great story, your story! Now Save it as a PDF and you'll have your very own (viral) report/ebook constantly creating income for you AWAY from your site.

Next, at the top of your sidebar tell your visitors you've written about your Story. You've worked hard on site to get the traffic, now you want them on a list of Tinnitus Information Seekers - People who will happily pay to relieve that annoying ringing in there ears!

Sign up with Aweber - they make it very easy for you to create some HTML code that you drop into a text widget at the top of your side bar.

Then go to Fiverr.com and pay five bucks for someone to do an ebook graphic for you.

People will readily give you their name and email address to get your personal story about how you beat tinnitus. Then when you discover other products and services that can help, you can send your list and email telling them how wonderful its - some will buy meaning more income for you!!

      ====

      *New Name*

Right, I think that's enough to be getting on with, now just one last thing, the name of the eBook.

      I'm going to recommend:

      "How I Beat Tinnitus"
      by Peter Levin

I've also done a check and the domain name "HowIBeatTinnitus.com" is free so would strongly suggest you grab it!!

Your newly named site will then be ready to make you some real money. And you'll be able to do what you want to do - help others in the same situation as you.

And remember, there's plenty of people out there that will be happy to pull out their credit cards and pay for stuff an 'expert' like you is recommending they try.

      ====

Well, Pete, here endth your lesson on how to begin making some real money on the internet and - all from your personal struggle with all that ringing in your ears!!

The trick is, once you've got that going on auto-pilot, you just rince and repeat!!

Don't forget, you can set up more articles to be posted in the future, one a week maybe?

I hope that has been an interesting read for you!!

Any way, good luck Pete. I appreciate this may all be a bit too far out of your present comfort zone, but hopefully you can see where the money really comes from now, and I'll be happy to help you out if you need it.

      Best Wishes,

      Paul.
      PaulFosterMarketing.com

PS: I've just searched my database of half a million PLR articles and came up with a list of 89 with the keyword of Tinnitus. There'll be some repeats obviously, but I'll happily zip them up and email them to you if you want. At one a week, that's at least a years, worth of posts, lol.

Pete, take a look at Jakes site. - Jakedennert.com You'll see exactly what I have described above. You can always create a page on your blog like Jake has done, specifically to promote your ebook. What Jake has done is excellent, and exactly what you are looking to achieve.

        - Jake, I've just grabbed a copy of your eBook! Looks like I'll have something decent to read on my iPhone in bed later, lol!!

          Hey Paul,

I appreciate the compliments, man... and thanks for pickin' up my report!

Looks like you're just as thorough as I am when I offer help and advice, and that's great to see.

          Haha, readin' in bed eh?

Hope it doesn't put you to sleep!

          Nah, it's just 23 pages... shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks again, and I'll see ya 'round the forum!

      Hi Jake.

You are right on the money! (so to speak!)

Yup, this was my first attempt at a "sniper site" for the keyword "maskers for tinnitus".

      Thanks for the kind words!

I was so excited after I read "google sniper" that I went right after it. The problem is that even though my keyword isn't that great, I looked like it would be easy to rank for and I thought it would be good experience.

Now I did this within days of "Panda" coming out, so maybe that was the problem... but I wrote article after article hoping/expecting to rise in the google rankings and nothing kept on happening.

Then I got so frustrated, I kind of put it on a shelf in disgust for a few months so I could clear my head and take a fresh look at it. (I got too close to it!)

Anyway, thanks for the advice Jake! I'll work it in and hopefully we can get those sales starting up!

        PAFoster,

        I'm blown away.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share so much thoughtful, detailed information with me.

I certainly see the value in your long term advice and it makes a lot of sense for next steps. I confess I'm a little overwhelmed, but I'll start figuring out how to take some tiny bites and start making some progress.

All of the articles are actually my own that were created using advice from Sniper: 500-600 words, keyword rich, etc. Based on your comments, it sounds like I am ending up with a site that is built too much with google in mind and too overwhelming for humans. (and then to top it off, google doesn't seem to be particulaly impressed... looks like I will have to learn more about backlinking after all. I just learned about social monkey, so I'll try that for starters!)

I've never used a PLR article, but I have researched some content from other article sites. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing any tinnitus articles you would care to share.

I was a little curious about you mentioning putting three related articles all into one post, and then I realized that with the way I was using headings it looked like three different posts. I get it now. Way too many words, and my headings look like new posts. I'm naturally pretty chatty when I'm typing, so I'll see if I can't figure out how to adjust my style into something a little more friendly for folks with shorter attention spans, and I'll take the hint and try splitting things up a little.

This is my first attempt at using wordpress, so I'm kind of floundering around a little. I *hate* the dates on the site, so I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction for how to get rid of them. (I'm not afraid to edit files if I know where to look... especially since I always back stuff up before I start tweaking!)

The rest of your stuff, while wonderful, is going to take me a bit of time to digest, but I'm very excited to try it out.

If I could get this site to the point of even a few sales a month and then repeat the technique, I'll be golden!

        Thanks again for your help!

Hey. I think your site LOOKS great, and you're definitely doing a good job by providing a lot of content. However, there are a few things I would change about the content itself. Here is what I would do differently:

1, I would talk about the reader/potential customer more

Even though this is just your blog, you should treat it as a vehicle for sales. It's definitely good to talk about yourself sometimes, because telling a story that your customers can relate to is helpful. but in your blog posts, it seems you rarely talk about your prospective customers. You use phrases like "depressed, irritable... afraid of snapping," but only in reference to yourself.

You should acknowledge that the reader may be experiencing these things, with lines like "have you ever been depressed, irritable, afraid of snapping" (for example). When you acknowledge them like that, everytime they say "yes," it draws them in. Talk about the feelings your prospective customer might associate with their tinnitus.

2, I would say ay more about what the product is and DOES. You do mention this in the post "Maskers for Tinnitus, What the heck are they," but discussing the functionality of the product is a central enough objective that you should probably devote more than one post to it. try to weave in references about how the device functions, in general themed posts. for example, if you're talking about how maskers saved you from screaming at a customer one day, include a comment on how the awesome little earbuds fit perfectly into your ear and didn't cause even the slightest bit of annoyance (just an arbitrary example).

3, I would use more bullet points. Bullet points leave more blank space and make it easier to read your stuff. The more you use, the more readers will bother to stick around.

4, I would include a call to action. Just because this is your blog, doesn't mean you can't include a call to action. At the end of each post, you can include a little plug like "so don't forget to purchase your maskers...," followed by a link to whatever site you go to to purchase maskers.

hope i was of some assistance!
