One thing that confuses me..

In copywriting, I've been taught constantly to write as I'm talking to a friend and such, which is great advice, and warms my copy up.

But aren't there times when I need to be more professional, and slightly more well spoken?

If so, how do I decide which style to use and when? (My voice, or my professional tone)?

Any advice from the more experienced members would be greatly appreciated,

I always try and write for the target demographic.

I always ask "Who is going to be reading this?" and then work from there.

If Im doing a sales page for some World Of Warcraft fans then it will be totally different than a Press Release for a law firm.

Not always easy to nail down who the target is but its the first thing I look at and then go from there.

Dude, how does free copywriting sound to you?

Ha! As if you thought I was serious! It’s a nice thought, but unfortunately it’s not happening. I know I know, that was mean but I had to get you to start reading this somehow"

I wouldn't start with this on your website. I would think "F*** you, bye".

You must talk to the friend--how you talk all depends on who the
    friend is.

You'll realize that when people are really angry they resort to
a different type of language--the simpler kind, because this
is more natural to them. There is the "impress other people"style
of speaking and there is the "be yourself" style. In copywriting
you want the "be your friend" style.

Grammar often kills EMOTIONS. That's why poets have their
won grammar and copywriters should too.

The audience and the emotion you want to trigger is what matters.

For instance the emotion of anger seems to work well when selling health products. But this may not work for software targeting engineers.

When you are writing you need to take the professional tone of the target audience and talk like them. Use their lingo, style and tone.

The other advice I would give you is to study various letters and see how the conversational style is applied. Look at fundraising letters, financial letters and letters selling health products. You will see a distinct trend.

Think about the different kinds of people you talk to. Do you speak the same way to a child as an adult?
Generally not. You also wouldn't speak the same way to a lawyer as you would a car mechanic, even if both of them are your friends.
It all comes down to KNOW your audience, and speak on their level.

You'll know if you know who your target market is. And I'm not saying your general market, I'm talking about that one person who is THE person buying what you're selling.

Say you've got a diet you're selling. Now, you can't say your target market is every overweight person out there, because not every person wants to go on a diet. You've got to do your reseach before you ever start writing. Pick out that one person ready to buy your diet before they even get to your page, they just need that little push. You have a conversatoin with them (your copy) and that's the push they need.

Once you narrow it down to that one person, that's when you'll know if you're having this conversation at a bar, across a corporate desk, at a bowling alley or on a couch with a controller in your hands.
