Market Research When Writing Your Own Website Copy

Hi all!

I'm getting ready to write the copy for my own copywriting services, and I was wondering how best to do the market research for that? Where would you go to find out how entrepreneurs who appreciate copywriting think and what they look for when hiring a copywriter? Thanks!

    Who is your ideal client?

Are you targeting a specific niche?

    What's your brand?

What makes you uniquely capable to sell products and services for entrepreneurs?

What makes your approach to copywriting and WORKING WITH YOUR CLIENTS different?

How can you communicate your ability to reveal the most effective approach for massively selling?

    Personally, I wouldn't research anything.

You've been exposed to way too much here.

I'd focus on honing in upon your unique voice and broadcasting your brand before researching what other copywriters are doing...

      They want results.

They want you to make them lots of money.

They want orignal work, not swipin'.

They'd like you to be easy to work with.

They respect people who say it like it is.

Most need a full-service marketing consultant even though they're coming to you as a "copywriter."

Also, read some of the self-promotional letters written by esteemed members of this forum. You'll see the array of objections you need to overcome to recieve that first call or email.

That would be your best market research.

Regarding Ross's advice, you might find this post from Alex Cohen very useful:

Also... a sales letter is as much about filtering out the wrong prospects as it is attracting the right ones... particularly for a service-heavy business like copywriting.

Don't be afraid to paint an exact picture of who you'd like to work with (Mark does a good job of that)... and scare off anyone else.

Before someone complains, I apologize for my bad English. I´m Swedish.

Anway. Just like you, I´m working on a sales page for my copywriting services...

    Here´s some things I´ve found in my research, that might be helpful to you;

First, Entrepreneurs want´s concreteness. It´s all about the numbers.

Let me explain: they know all about their business, and they are constantly looking for ways to sell more products and make more money. Period.

Show them how, and why, you are a good investment.

Second, most entrepreneurs work very long hours, and generally, they have pretty bad relationships because of it. Show them how marketing can give them less time at the office... and more hours with the family.

Third, I´ve found it useful to show clients how marketing (if it´s well done... by me) works as a tool to generate passive income... which is one of the biggest reasons they got into business in the first place.

Always remember, as a Copywriter, you are the "mechanism" that takes the client from where he is now... to where he wants to be.

I hope you found this post useful.
