Does anyone happen to know how much the elite copywriters

Try watching this subforum to identify people you think are "elite copywriters", and PM them to find out. I doubt they want this info shared around.

Also, they often charge a %age of the gross. That would be contract-specific.

    Hi James,

It varies by niche (IM, weight loss, b2B, magazines, etc.,) type of copywriting (long form sales letter, display ads, direct mail, etc.,) and type of compensation (flat fee, salary, pay for performance/variable, partnering.)

Do you have a particular focus?

No specific focus. I was just wondering how much it would cost to
hire someone who really, really knows what they are doing.

Since you want numbers, Its gonna be $5,000 on the low end, $30,000 or more on the high end.

          I totally agree.

In fact, most people charging these kind of fees also ask of royalties in addition to long term business commitment.

You network, you test and you keep working on your marketing/positioning.

By elite I guess you mean the people who make six figures or more per year.

Copywriters base what fees they charge based off of supply and demand plus negotiation.

The fact is copywriters want to make as much as possible, publishers want to pay the least possible. They meet in the middle based off supply and demand, plus some negotiation based on the skill of the writer.

The better the writer, the more demanding he can be.

Cost comes down to market and medium. For an infomercial or other television advert. I rather charge a client an initial lump-sum, rather than royalties. For internet copy, LS+Royalties (diminishing) is something I rather charge.

All of this can be negotiated between copywriter and client, however.

Its almost always a negotiation process. You will just have to do a lot of networking and get reads. Everyone could probably give you good advice but if it's not pertaining to what you need a copywriter for then it might not be applicable to you. Thus could confuse you even more.
