I'm compiling some research for a blog post and for my own personal enjoyment and I was just wondering what the most common questions we, as copywriters, ask our clients?

I'll start things off with my top 5.

Can you please define your project?

When will you be ready to start the project?

When do you want the project completed?

Have you worked with freelance copywriters before?

What is your budget for this project?

What about everyone else?

  My questionnaire has three sections... Client, Product or Service, and Prospect.
  
  In the Prospect section, these are the 3 most important questions:
  
  1. What emotions is your prospect feeling?
  2. What does your prospect think will solve his problem?
  3. How does your prospect picture success in his mind?

Who benefits from your product or service... and WHY?

What emotions do you want to convey.

What emotions do you want to elicit?

What makes BUYING your product or service urgent.

How can owning your product or participating in your services change the lives of your audience?

What are people leaving on the table if they don't take action RIGHT NOW?

What's your brand message (if you have one...)

What makes you PASSIONATE about offering your product or service? (I love this one, because it can really let me know if I WANT to work with the entrepreneur.)

Maybe I'm doing it wrong... I don't consider myself a copywriter (because it's a highly skilled art form that requires more creativity than I possess) but I have helped a few others by rewriting their sales pages and creating sales video scripts.

I've never had a list of set questions and don't have an agenda. I will ask follow up questions about specific areas of their offer but I don't think I've asked the same question twice.

What I have tried to do is extract the passion they feel for their product / service... then do a hell of a lot of research into what their target market is looking to buy, and find elements in the product that matches.

What tone and style do you want? What's the message platform? That is, is it a print ad, a direct mailer, a sales letter, etc.
