Pardon my ignorance, but....

....what exactly is a swipe feel and how does one go about creating one? What type of document is it - Word, Excel....???

Here's what I think it is - a file containing examples of stuff you can use and/or refer back to for inspiration. Would that be close to the mark?

Thanks in advance for the help,
Ray

A collection of clippings, whether virtual or physical. Copy or pointers or ads that you liked or that inspired you for one reason or another.

Basically, something to pull out and study (again, either physical or virtual - whatever works best for you) that can give you ideas, help you improve, or get you motivated to get back to work.

    Its pretty easy dude.

Its basically a compilation of persuasive headlines, bullet points and benefits.

What you got to do is... Read sales pages... EVERYDAY

And open a notepad txt or word doc, then copy paste your favorite.

The idea is not to copy, but to replicate that in which you
feel physiologically compels YOU to want to buy.

    BOOM!

Do that every day, for months on end.
Then you'll start to realize there is a certain "common theme"
even "common character" in said swipe file.

As soon as you start to feel one with that voice,
(AND you can write well) writing copy will be a piece of cake

A good swipe file will have examples of EVERY component from successful sales letters.

What makes YOU want to buy may or may not be relevant. It's what compels the target market you're writing to that's important.

A swipe/creative is a piece of text that engages your target market (email list type) and encourages them through wording to perform an action (usually a clickthrough).

Some swipes are long, others are short and punchy, it really depends on the type of list that you are promoting to.

It is worth mentioning that an Ad swap is where two IMers swap their swipes and promote the others to their lists. This is also known as a cross promotion, is may be that they are promoting each other for Affiliate commission sales or they are swapping leads
through optins on each others lead capture pages.

If you purchase a solo ad they will request a swipe from you.

It is worth mentioning that your swipe headline should be relevant to the text within.

    good luck

  • You can also get newspaper ad swipes from NewspaperArchive.com.

Too cheap like me to pay the monthly fee? I get it free online through the central Los Angeles Library website.

A library? It's a big building with lots of books and stuff. (That was for the kids.)

      LOL. Good one Joe.
It looks like a lot of people have already answered this. I just have a warning for you. When you're writing your sales copy DON'T actually swipe the content. It's really tacky and can get you into trouble. The swipe file is meant for inspiration, not for writing the sales page for you.

As far as I'm concerned, a copywriter can never have too many headline swipe files. It's a bit like the old adage that you can never be too rich. Usually swipe files originate from offline text, mostly from ads from newspaper, magazines and from old but successful marketing campaigns.
