I Need help with my blogging tactics

I've been making a pretty good disaster of my on-line venture for well over a year now, and need some real help. I seriously need to get things right- I've been putting way too much time and effort in for having such a pathetic result.

All of my visitors so far have come from either a safelist or traffic exchange (that pretty much sums up how my sales have been).

I've been struggling to maintain 10 blogs (for each of my sites), having been told it would help with SEO, but I'm thinking that's old information, as it hasn't helped much.

I stuck it out, thinking "OK, it's a slow process, but it'll pay off eventually." The blogs themselves still don't get much traffic. I need to fix it.

I have 2 questions for now:
1. Is it better to focus on one blog, or to have a few that pertain to the topic?

2. How in the world, exactly, do you set up the whole network/link/ back link/RSS thing?- which I'm sure might have a lot to do with the fact that my blogs seem invisible.
In any material I've read, I'd been told "you need to do it" but left out HOW to actually set it up.

Pretty much, what do you do with a blog (besides posting) to draw traffic?

Also, I have basically the same sort of questions in regard to social sites, seeing as how they have blogs too.

I'll answer your question about getting traffic, but I'd say this might belong in the main discussion forum. Anyway...

Traffic comes from links. Simple as that. So work on building links. Links work in 2 ways, one is the direct traffic you'll get. The second is that search engines use incoming links to calculate your rankings.

So, go to related forums and use a signature thread. Comment on related blogs. Get on the social sites and promote it.

Here's another tip (I haven't seen your site, not judging) but to build up a decent readership you have to post good stuff. If your posting lackluster content, or sloppy content, or content that doesn't suck readers in and have them begging for more, you're not going to build up long term traffic.

If you post great stuff, people will come back, they'll naturally link to you, and your site will go viral.

Hope that helps a little bit.

I would def have to agree with what scott said here as well as giving away great, great content - no blogging just to blog but def giving away some heavy hitting stuff with your blog

The reason I put this in the copywriting area is because (I figure) there is no better place to find the real experts. Only a fool will look for trees in the desert.

Motion seconded, and I approve... Thank you for the help, fellas- I appreciate it.

After having made some optimization changes, my blogs started to get some love.

In another forum, I also got a piece of advice... when I put them all together, I come up with this:

Sign up for a social network (which usually have blogs AND forums)
Post to that blog consistently with real, original, quality content
        - Backlink that content to relevant areas of your own site

Put banner ads (laced with cloaked affiliate links, of course) to quality products on your profile page.

        Join up with groups.
Comment on other blogs and in group forums (your signature is used) on that network.

Rinse and repeat on another network (Mind you- keep it down to a couple at a time).

Track the results, and stick with the most productive.

Sound like I have the right idea? I've already started with this approach, and just would like to know whether I'm on the right track, before I waste another couple of months, lol. I have a terrible habit of doing before thinking.

Seriously, thank you for the help.
