I have no STORY to sell! Help!

So i keep hearing that you always need a STORY to sell. But if you are entering a new niche and you have very little experience in that industry, how can you have a good story. (I guess this it matters that I am talking about a service type industry where the person doing it is so important, compared to a product where ITS story matters more.)

I think i heard Jeff Paul say that you need to use someone elses, or "synthesize" a story.

Does anyone have anyone have any ideas how to do either of these, or any other ideas?

There is ALWAYS a story. The story doesn't have to be about you
or the product but can be a lead in story. Even for a service type
industry you can give your credentials or need of them in the sales
    letter.

Many people think that you have to be an expert to get clients and
so you must pretend that you are the best in the world to get
clients. But maybe there are clients are are NOT looking for the
best in the world because they cannot afford them.

So be honest and say that you are new and give the advantages
of being new. For example, your price is lower, you are more
flexible, you'll make your pay contingent on results etc., so less
    RISK.

Remember Avis vs. Hertz. Avis admitted they were number two
and used it to their advantage: "We're number two. We try harder."

Talk about being creative in your advertising.

    Joel,

Let's say your service was tax preparation...

You're a brand new accountant... no track record... no history... no story.

You can easily tell the story of notorious gangster Al Capone.

Wanted by every division in the government but they couldn't get him. The agency that finally brought him to his knees? The IRS. In fact the only federal prison time he ever saw was due to tax evasion.

You see... Al had the best gunmen... the best lawyers... even the best shoe shine people working for him. But his tax preparer? A hack. A lowdown dirty criminal just like Al.

Now... imagine for a minute that Al had a good... honest... certified tax preparer...

Old Scarface may have remained a free man forever. And had that accountant used modern day software to track last minute tax code changes... Capone would have been able to legally take advantage of every up to date tax credit, write off and exemption.

Gangland history of Chicago can't be changed... but your history is not yet written.

Sure, you're no mobster hiding millions in bootlegging money from the Feds.

But that doesn't mean you should settle for any old hack tax preparer.

My name is Joe Blow and I'm a certified tax preparer who blah blah blah

Theres def a story somewhere within your stuff, I guarentee it!

We almost totally communicate in stories and they allow you to convey a bunch of dfferent things about yourself and your products

Wow, all very good stuff. Thanks so much for replying.

I def could come up with A story, but im thinking, that because this is a service business, selling security alarms, to be exact, that I especially will have to be extra credible and believable.

I have it in my head that I had to have something like "i started 20 years ago and im an expert, blah blah blah."

        Am I wrong?

        Thanks again.

Come on Joel... you got this... It's easy. Especially your biz.

Just find a true story about how someone was saved by their security system. I'm sure if you scour the local papers you'll find something great. Then tell that story in a dramatic way that sells (not your particular service) security in general.

Or you could tell a horrific story and paint the picture of how it might have turned out much differently if they had one of your systems.

Here's a quick (but not ideal) example:

Tell the story of the massacre at Sharon Tate's estate at the hands of Charles Manson's gang. Then go into how many lives could have been saved if they had the automatic fence alarm (or whatever)... and how a car would have been dispatched to the property before they even got into the home (or whatever.)

Seriously... your niche is probably among the handful of EASIEST ones to write story for.

If you want a good story,
tell the story of why you came up with the product....
        why it was needed?
        who gave you the idea?
what brought you to the conclusion that the market place must have this?

Tell a story of how your prospects might be feeling, jump right in and tell the conversation going on in their head.

        Good luck

Do you know of anyone who has had their house broken into? Why not write about that, the feeling of being violated, with some complete stranger (with who knows what diseases) opening and closing all their drawers and cupboards and going who knows where in their house.

Some complete stranger in THEIR house.

Then some stats on home break-ins, assaults and murders.

Then you can tell (in a short paragraph) the stories about different people. eg
Like the pensioner in Washington who....

And the young family in Colorado who came home to find...

          etc.

Even better, can you uncover stories where people's houses were broken into EVEN THOUGH they had security systems installed? Great way to invalidate your competition.

Joel, I will tell you what, PM me and together we will pound out a story for you to use. I will show you how to dig up stats for your local area as well as help in showing why your system is better than the competitions. Having been a professional printer for 7 years I am very familiar with brochure type ads and those are what you are building now only you are doing it for the web instead of paper. I think I can really help you out.

    Thanks everyone!

I especially like the idea about writing a story that explains how i came up with my product/service... And vin, tying in something like that manson idea could be great!

    You guys are awesome.

  • Don't forget, you could also tell the story of how and why you got into the business. Use your "newness" as a plus instead of a minus.

For example, you got into selling security systems because a friend got robbed etc. You spent the next 6 months, 10-12 hours per day searching for the absolute best security system out there. Every system had it's faults... Every system had a horror story to go along with it... And not one of them was good enough to install for your friend - until you found XX.

Fresh to the marketplace doesn't mean you don't have valuable knowledge or experience to contribute, so turn the potential negative of inexperience into the positive of new ideas, and earth-shaking motivation.

      Nice story...

more recent could also be wesley snipes- hes in jail (or going) for tax evasion because his accountant f' him up... suppseodly...

And I'd also have to agree with Vin that Security is probably the easiest sale (assuming your product/offer is comeptitive) since we are naturally programed for survival.. I believe they call it the "fight or flight" response.

And if your from the USA- you could probably tell a story or mention how much the USA spends on Security alone. USA spends billions on security.

Thats one way politicians sell us War- is using our security and need for survival.
