Backing Out Of Standard View

Did that heading make you click here to see what it was about?

I recently received an email with that exact heading and it stopped me in my tracks. I HAD to click on it to see what it was about. I imagined ducking into a dark alley to avoid being spotted (picture Film Noir: Trench coat, hat drawn down over my brow - Manny Calevera style).

It ended up being a question about mobile site redirection in another forum I visit but the way it grabbed my attention was stunning and rare. Did anyone else get that feeling? Maybe not, maybe it's just me but I thought I'd post it here in the copywriting forum as an example of an email subject that FORCED me to open the email and read.

I see a lot of people talking about the demise of email. eMail is not dead quite just yet. It just takes a decent subject line to get people's attention.

Just sayin'...I thought it was interesting.

Curiosity headlines work pretty good on forums. People are browsing, looking for something interesting to read.

Not so much on sales letters.

I agree of course but my point was that it was strong and made me look. I had no idea what that email was about but I (like everyone) receive dozens of emails a day and that subject did not raise any spam flags. I didn't even think of spam - I just had to see what it was about.
