I am launching an internet marketing business so I am thinking of an incentive to have potential clients opt-in to a form on my website so I can work on creating my list. The form would say, Learn the 7 MOST Important things about Internet Marketing, or something around those lines.

Do any of you guys use something like this? If so, what do you use? How has it worked for you? Are there any other steps you take? How do you proceed to the point where you make a deal?

Not meaning to be a snark, but I'm a little worried you're asking these questions when you're selling yourself as an internet marketing master. Anyway, yes, these types of offers are frequently made use of to build lists and keep in touch with potential prospects. I haven't been building one myself (bad form but I'll get there eventually), but you can look at just about any marketer's website to see examples. Off the top of my head, go check out Carol Tice's blog "Make a Living Writing" to see the opt-in form on the right side.

Generally best to copy her and mention your list will "receive updates" as well as the report, otherwise they might not realize or be frustrated to see you continuing to email them. You'll want to offer people some value before dropping an offer on them, whether it's sending them blog updates or an auto responder series with more information.

Essentially the idea is to build up rapport and interest, dropping hints about how you can supplement the information you're giving people, before saying, "By the way, I have XYZ which could help you bring in even more money using the online marketing techniques I've modified over the years."

Thanks for your feedback. I am starting this business from scratch and have a general knowledge of internet marketing. I have other team members that I will outsource work to, but it is not an excuse to not be as informed as other in this forum. I am working my way to learning internet marketing with my mentor.

      Thanks again!

"7 Most Important Things About Internet Marketing" is too broad
    and vague.

There's no real promise or benefit for someone to opt in.

That could mean SO many things you're talking about in the opt in.
I think someone can become confused about what you're trying to show them.

But the way to make an opt in better is to offer them such a cool tip, or secret technique... that when they read it, they'd think to themselves... man, I just GOT to find out what he's giving away.

And make it a really good, specific secret that's something MANY people want to know about.

Because if you offer a really kick ass "secret" or technique with your opt in, and it's a really good free report you give... people will start thinking to themselves... "man, if he's giving this stuff away... I can't IMAGINE how good his paid stuff is"

"Find Out the One Traffic Technique that Sent me 300,000 Site Visitors in 2 Days"
will always out pull "how to get more traffic" because it's more specific and there's more of a specific promise.

Or... "The Single Most Important Thing You Can Do on Your Sales page"

Or something that's focusing on just one thing... so it doesn't become confusing to the reader.

Give them too many choices or options and they won't do anything. But tempt them with a really killer technique and they'll opt in.

So, the way it can be strengthened is by having a more specific and benefit-driven headline... as well as more benefit-driven and specific bullets...which really spell out what you can do for them.

Get really specific... and find THE most important promise you can make to your market.

What do they most want to achieve? Add a timeframe in there and you've got a good
    optin.

    Another example...

"How to Lose Weight" is very broad.

but "How I Lost 29 Pounds in the Last 60 Days" is more
    specific.

Specifics really help because they make it seem more real
    and achievable.

so, in the internet marketing field, it's just so damn big... it's
almost like you're not targeting anything or anyone with your
    claims.

Think of what internet marketers really want... and zero in on
    those in your optin.

Hint: its all about making the benjamins.

    So an optin that reads...

"The 3 Steps that Increased My Traffic, Sales, and Income... Putting
More Cash in My Bank Account in Just 7 Days"

That's just off the top of my head, but you want to drill down to specifics
and not be too broad or you won't appeal to anyone.

The timeframe makes it seem doable and realistic... and the benefit paints the pleasing "before and after" in their minds.

So, just make the opt in simple, but have it contain a secret or tip that's so powerful, they'd feel foolish if they didn't sign up.
