When does it become offensive? Is this?

A sub-headline featured in my sales letter says this:

"How foolish would you feel if... you spent 1000s on advertising each month...
... and nothing on the rich vein of gold in your existing client base?"

Don't want to suggest they're foolish, but DO want to introduce the nasty little thought as a distinct possibility if they don't do take action on the idea.

I had it as:

"How foolish would you look if... you spent 1000s on advertising each month...
... and nothing on the rich vein of gold that is your existing client base?"

I changed "look" to "feel" because to me it takes it from, "people would think you're foolish, laughing at you behind your back" (offensive) to "privately, you would feel foolish but you can do something to prevent it."

Your thoughts?

Hmm... from the other tests I have seen done by Drayton Bird and Ted Nicholas the negative approach doesn't work near as well as the positive. I don't personally like the sub head but it seems like a good one. I agree with look being better.

I think the distinction between look and feel is minimal. The thing is the word foolish. But there's an easy fix.

How much cold hard cash are you leaving on the table by doing (or not doing) yadda yadda...? I thought I was a pretty smart guy until I realized how much more money I could have been taking to my bottom line. And when I realized what I was doing, I fixed it on the spot. Shouldn't you?

I think something like this makes the point and it's not offensive. Good luck.

Hmm I don't really like a negative copywriting style, haven't seen Gary Halbert or any other big names doing it.

Be careful with your headline, it could make or break your sale. A headline alone can sell your product...

Looking at it out of context it's impossible to say whether or not it's likely to work.

And FWIW... tons of A-list copywriters use negative approaches in their subheads.

But I'd need to see the whole letter to be sure.

If you don't offend a few people, you haven't said anything.

Be bold. Say whatever you want, as long as it's true.

Boldness keeps eyes on the page.

I don't see what's offensive anyway. Asking someone if they would feel foolish isn't going to hurt. I've never used a warning in any of my ads so far, but have heard they work.

What you're seeing here is a bunch of educated guesses. If in doubt, TEST!

There's no other way to get a reliable answer.
