how to choose the best markets to sell to...

I do a lot of copy critiques for folks... and there have been times where I've looked at the product being sold, and realized the best sales copy in the world wouldn't help them.

Why?

Because they were selling something THEY wanted to sell... not what the market wanted to BUY.

Just because you have a great idea for the next "big thing"... there's no sure bet that it will even sell.

That's why, to stack most of the odds in your favor, it's important to target markets where people are actively searching for solutions.

In fact, to make it simple and give myself the best chance of success... any time i'm considering entering a new market, I make sure it's a market where people have a lot of problems they need solved.

No problem can often times mean NO sale... because there's not enough need there.

So when you're thinking of entering a market, or creating a product... make sure it's one in which people are actively looking for solutions, there's a lot of problems they're having, they have huge wants/needs/desires, etc...

and don't create a product just because YOU think it will work.

Find out what people want and show them how to get it

problems, wants, needs are all good markets. and it's why products in the financial/employment/weight loss/health/dating/sex, etc... those will always sell because those are markets where people continue to have problems they want to solve.

if there's no problem or huge desire, there's usually no sale.

The bigger and more painful the problem--- the bigger the opportunity for you to create a product that will succeed.

So the next time you're thinking of product creation, make sure you're thinking about solving problems or tackling huge desires... they are pretty much markets that will increase your odds of success.

I've noticed over the years that people who are desperate for solutions to their problems make excellent customers. Here are some suggestions to get your juice flowing:

    - People with bad/poor credit or financial difficulties.
    - People losing a home.
    - People with health problems.
    - Gamblers
    - People going through divorce.
    - People with poor self image.

    and so on...

Great post. Markets first, products second. It's amazing how seductive it can be to get this reversed.

Here's One of Gary Halbert's most Famous stories ...
For folks on here that don't know...

"If you and I both owned a hamburger stand and we were in a contest to see who would sell the most hamburgers, what advantages would you most like to have on your side?"

The answers vary. Some people say they would like to have the advantage of having superior meat from which to make their hamburgers. Others say they want sesame seed buns. Others mention location. Someone usually wants to be able to offer the lowest prices.

      And so on.

Anyway, after my students are finished telling what advantages they would most like to have I say to them: "O.K., I'll give you every single advantage you asked for. I, myself, only want one advantage and, if you will give it to me, I will whip the pants off of all of you when it comes to selling burgers!"

"What advantage do you want?" they ask.
"The only advantage I want," I reply, "is A STARVING CROWD!"
