Not collecting payment info up front

8 replies
Hi;

I'll be running a test on a physical product soon where I don't collect payment data up front--I wait 30 days before payment is due. Not only that, but the product costs me about $400! (Fortunately the niche is upscale, so not a lot of con artists).

Has anyone tested this out? Was it fairly easy for you to collect on the payments once your trial period was finished?

    Are you selling this over the internet? Is this a B2B market or B2C?

    Sounds to me like you're asking for trouble.

    Why don't you want to collect payment upfront? This seems like a great opportunity for a scammer to come in and take your product. I don't know, if something costs me $400 upfront, then I would really ask for payment information.

    Not only that, but as a customer, I'd think that you're BSing me because there is no way someone is giving away a $400 product for no payment information. What are you giving away?

    I'd scrap it.

    "You pay nothing up front" is a good angle for some kind of results-oriented service where the service provider is expected to create a measureable result. Think a personal injury lawyer working on contingency.

    There's really no reason the seller of a physical product should do this.

    As someone said above, you're basically inviting scammers to just take the product on you for free.

    The scam issue is mitigated greatly by the industry.

    Virtual credit card numbers make it easy to scam over the internet. There is a fundamental level of trust involved.

    Anyways I'll give it a trial and see if it's worth it

    Some dude named Robert Collier wrote about something similar in some chapter of some book. If you can find some book bearing said dude's name, see whether there's some 19th chapter titled "Will You Accept This Little Gift?"

    Exciting reading!

    Collect the money up front and then offer a money back guarantee if they aren't happy with the product. You'll sleep better this way.
