Why I Remained Broke for So Long...

To say I grew up poor would be a major understatement.

My Dad, who was the only one who worked in my family, made $20,000 a year... with 7 kids to support.

Needless to say... I did without a lot of things. But that really motivated me over the years, to try and figure out how to make a lot of money.

But for the better part of 25 years of my life, money remained pretty elusive.

I had a ton of careers, like being a police officer, real estate agent, and about 20 others in a list too long to name.

And all throughout each one, even though I was motivated by money, I stayed broke or close to it.

As the years passed by... I started scouring the Make Money magazines that you see in the bookstores, and responded to all the get rich quick classified ads that so many people answer.

I tried Amway, chain letters, and probably 50 other "make money quick" plans and schemes.

It wasn't until I became a personal trainer in 1999 that something happened to me, and a light came on.

When I first started training clients, I plastered my brochures and flyers all over the place.

No takers, no clients, and once again... broke.

It wasn't until one day, I noticed a lady doing an exercise wrong, so I went over to her and showed her the right way.

She thanked me, I went on my way, and thought nothing of it.

A few days letter, she asked me if I offered personal training, and sure enough... she signed up as a client.

I wasn't even trying to land a client, she came to me.

Over the course of the next few months, as I began trying to help more and more of our gym members with their goals, I started landing so many personal training clients, I had to turn many of them away.

But when the gym I was working at shut down... I suddenly found myself out of a job.

Thankfully, I had picked up a book in a book store a few days prior called "multiple streams of internet income" by Robert Allen.

That book gave me the idea to put my personal training programs online and in 2001, launched Muscle Building, How to Build Muscle, Muscle Building Workout Program

Initially it was tough going because I had no idea how to sell online.

But I remembered that time back when I was training clients, and
realized... if I landed clients simply by helping them, let's see if that works online.

And sure enough, it did. I started giving away free information, free reports, free articles, free newsletters... and as I tried to help more and more people, I made a lot more money.

When I sold that company to get into copywriting and consulting, I now knew what to do.

I knew that the secret to success was NOT chasing money, it was helping out as many people as possible, without expecting anything in return.

So in my copywriting business, I started offering free advice, free critiques, free consults, etc... and sure enough... my income rose quickly.

And here's why this ties into copywriting.

All those years of chasing after the money, and trying to find money-making
program after money making program... it left me broke.

It wasn't until I stopped thinking about making money and started
thinking of how i could help more people get what they want, without
me getting anything in return, that's when the money flowed.

These days, making money is easy and clear as day for me.

And that's why i'm writing this. If you're a copywriter who is struggling to land clients... don't think of yourself and your needs.

Think of your prospective client's needs of increased sales and more profits to their bottom line.

When writing proposals to try and land copy jobs, don't just write about you, your qualifications, and your samples only... also paint that picture for your prospect of how you can help them get what they want.

In your copy, you can increase your conversion rate by writing it solely based on what your market wants more.

No matter if you write copy, have your own business, or work for someone else... help them get what they want... and in turn, you will start to get more of what you want.

Now, the true way to wealth is to scale that... and use leverage to help out thousands or millions of people get what they want.

I talk to hundreds of prospects a month... and the fact is, most of them talk about them, their product, and how much money they want to make.

And yet, most of them are broke or are not doing as well financially as they could.

The ones I talk with who are all about helping their customers.... they are the ones with huge, booming, profitable businesses.

So if you've been writing proposals to try and land copy jobs, but you talk mostly about yourself... flip that around and show the other person how you can help them get what they want.

Think to yourself "how can i help the greatest number of people get what THEY want."

Don't be afraid to give away stuff, don't be afraid to offer free
advice or free critiques, or free samples, or anything else that shows
others that you can help them.

Even as a copywriter, think of ways you can help others improve
their marketing.

I promise, if you do that, the money will come to you.

Again, you need a way to monetize and make money from helping all those people, but going after money should take a back seat to the goal of helping people.

Look, I'm your typical marketer and info-junkie. I've bought them all
and tried them all. and I was broke for most of my early life.

When i started focusing on helping people without asking for anything
in return, finally, that's when the money started pouring in.

If you want to make more money as a copywriter, stop trying to make more money, instead try to help more people get what they want.

I promise, do that and you'll make more money.

Thanks for reading....

    In a nutshell...

It's better to give than to receive and do unto others as you'd like to have done unto yourself.

When we shift the focus of our attention away from ourselves putting the emphasis on the other person, listening to their wants, needs and desires - this is when the 'magic' starts to happen.

It's by constantly being aware of the thoughts and feelings of other people, being a good friend to others offering help as and when required that others reciprocate our freely giving nature to reward us in kind when the opportunity arises.

Commit random acts of kindness and the money will follow in it's own good time.

You just need to trust the process.

    Warmest regards,

Making this essential shift of consciousness is the key to success in ANY business.

I always communicate this mindset with my clients.

    Because so often...

They're too fixated on making money.

    And the fact is...

Chasing the money is exhausting, draining, depleting and rarely gets any kind of sustainable results.

    However...

When you do make that shift of thinking and start giving of yourself, freely, without an agenda...

...your circumstances will change quickly and dramatically.

    You'll have more inspiration.

You'll enjoy your business in a way you NEVER have before.

You'll manifest amazing relationships and collaborations.

    You'll feel more fulfilled.

    And yes...

The money will flow into your life like a tidal wave.

    But the key is:

    Not having an agenda.

You don't give of yourself... then immediately start tracking the results.

    That's dumb.

Here's an exercise I give my clients:

Write down all the ways your product or service helps people (this is also a great way to reveal your benefits from a new perspective.)

    Now...

Find a way to help someone (online or off,) utilizing one of the ideas you just wrote down.

    Great thread Shawn!

    mark

P.S. This is a positioning I've been using in my own marketing for years. And it works. Again though, you can't expect ANYTHING back. Funny enough, when you give to one person (like offering a critique on a thread here,) you'll very often receive something back from someone else... The universe works in amazing ways... IF you let it.

Thanks for the insight. Do you think that people might take advantage of you if they know you won't charge them? (i.e. friends).

What if someone you know has a great "idea" (to them, with no online experience) and they come to you wanting a website built with this and that blah blah?

I've just been biting the bullet and doing it thinking that I'll learn something along the way. Is this the correct mindset?

Forgive me, Greg, for ever referencing Gene Simmons from KISS, but he often says ideas are a dime a dozen. It's all in the execution. Even after launch, many good ideas die in the market:

On the other question, only you can determine if your friend is taking advantage of you. I suggest helping out your friend but arrange to get a testimonial out of it. You can use a good testimonial many, many ways to advance your business.

    Nice post Shawn.

Reminds me of Zig's line "You can have anything you want in life if you help enough people get what they want."

@ Greg: it's a balancing act. If they truly are a friend, they won't expect you to give them everything for free. It's why reciprocity works as a tool of influence. In the majority of cases, if you do something for someone, they will feel obligated to you. They'll feel they owe you one. How they repay that "debt" depends on that particular person and the particular context. In most cases it does come back. Not always, but most of the time.

    Pretty classic observation.

Funny that you should mention your personal training program, I just finished writing some copy for a self-publication course aimed a personal trainers wanting to build a reputation to land new clients.

I hit on a lot of the same points.

I agree with CopyMonster. This is right out of Zig Ziglars head " You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want",

One of the core concepts today is educating your client. The more you give away, the more the Law or Reciprocity comes into play. This basically means that as you give things away for free, people trust you and feel like they owe you something and are much more willing to pay you back.

This is why you see on many of those sales pages, "Sign up for three FREE Videos" series that hooks them in, educates them and then leads them to learn more by purchasing your product.

Very good advice help them and they shall help you in return. The more value you can offer someone the more money you will make. Earn that persons trust and respect and they will gladly buy from you over and over again without blinking an eye.
