Over the years, I've found most copywriters make the same
mistakes over and over again.

So I've made a video - it's all content.

Not selling a thing.

No requirement to opt-in.

Check it out:

Yes, Harlan -you are dead-on right. A very compelling video, and a must-watch for all just-starting copywriters.

What question that practically all potential clients ask.. must you the copywriter NEVER answer directly?

Instead answer the question the wanna-be client would ask if he/she knew enough to ask.

Harlan is like totally brilliant! Well worth a look-see-listen-hear.

Common rookie mistake for sure. I first met this piece of wisdom
in The Well-Fed Writer by Peter Bowerman. There is a big difference
between being a good copywriter and running a good copywriting
business. And most skilled copywriters are weak on the business side.

Most skilled artist need a marketer to help them out otherwise they'll
give away all their skills for free because it comes so second-nature
    to them.

As Harlan mentioned, creating and selling your own product is one option.

Another way is to find a good product on Clickbank with a crappy sales letter. Write a new sales letter and send traffic to it. Use your affiliate link as part of the order button and send them right to the Clickbank order page. Track your conversion rates and now you have proof of your skills.

Bottom line: Just get started. It doesn't matter if it's offering a low-cost introductory price for the first few clients. Or creating your own product... or promoting someone else's as an affiliate. Just get started with something.

The best time to make money is during a recession - especially for copywriters.

But it's what your mind tells you that could get in the way.

Start with the strategy I show you in the video.

It's all about building value for your writing.

If you simply quote a price, you haven't built any value at all.

There are hundreds of ways to get started.

        Pick one.

First of all your video is not working now. But, as long as I've read about the replies on your video it seems that they are very satisfied on your video. Even though I haven't seen the video or hear it I really think that it is very concise and very informative to the copywriters. Thank you for that video.

Ray, I challenge anybody who wants to make money as a copywriter
to read the best 12 books on the subject and not be capable of
writing circles around the average person who knows nothing of
selling in print - which describes most business owners.

Of course you have to practice the skills described in the books.
That's the skilled-trade part of it. The other part of it is running
a business and selling your services, positioning yourself as a
valuable advantage to the business people you assist. Artists
(and many writers fit that description) often suck at selling, so
for them the selling their skills part is the real job - what puts
    money in your pockets anyway.

Stunning video - Considering you are "not selling" I have a feeling it leaves a lot of people drooling to hear/see more of your stuff. Proof that your system works!!
Anyway, a question: I am not a copywriter (yet) but please tell me - does the same principle apply when people ask me how much I charge for articles?

Did you ever consider the article market is in the toilet?

      Why?

Because articles have become a commodity.

People expect to pay anywhere from $6-$15 an article.

      Again, why?

      Because there's no value here.

What can you do to add value to your clients?

      That's the key.

    Harlan,

your video is spot on! I have came across so many tire-kickers that ask price first. They do their window shopping -- and never seem to go any further. Many businesses, do not disclose their pricing for this very reason.

    Nice video, thanks.

I'm here to testify as to the veracity of Harlan's statement. If the copywriting courses from AWAI were my "high school"... then Harlan provided me with a truly superb "4-year Bachelor's degree" in copywriting, Internet marketing and working with clients education.

        Harlan's stuff is killer.

I got $4,000 for my very first copy job before getting his VBC program.

Then after watching the dvds and implementing just one or two of his techniques I closed a job for just over $9k.

(And that's small pickings compared to some other people.)

Similar techniques in a consulting situation have helped close 5-figure deals.

If that short video resonated with you at all, get VBC.

            Hi Tim,

I don't have Harlan's course, but you may want to look at
"Value-Based Fees: How to Charge - and Get - What You're Worth"
by Alan Weiss or any of his other books.

Why even spring for the book?

Why not waste more years of your life learning it yourself.

OR you could just take the profit plan handed to you word for word.

Complete with scripts telling you what to say.

Alan Weiss's material would fill about 10 minutes of the 5 DVD set.

            Peace.

(Free video tip and opt-in ...seems 'everyone' is following the same sales letter system now. I wonder why?....)

Great tip Harlan, many thanks for sharing it.

Reminds me of 'Controlling the Conversation'... a sales class I taught. Listen for and respond to particular questions with crafted, scripted, relevant questions of your own - to guide the prospect along the path you want them to walk along. Then finally, most ASKED to buy.

      Beautiful.

Seemed to work. We sold $4 million dollars in 11 months by taking the leadership role, building huge value in the prospect's mind and 'letting them decide' which buying option fitted them best.

Subscribed to your list just now,
      Don
