Before testing an element in your sales copy....

Lets say you are testing you opening paragraph...

What are some of the things you consider before testing this element?

For example...

the target market
the predictable readers response
etc etc

I would get a copy of Great Leads by Michael Masterson. He gives you some great info. on the right type of headline and lead paragraphs based on the stage of market awareness of your product.

He gives you several options depending on the stage of market awareness...that's how I would test an opening paragraph to start.

For example, if the market is very familiar with your product and brand, straight offers do well.

In contrast, stories as your copy lead do well, the less the market is aware of the solution or problem.

I always like to have a baseline to compare against. Then I start doing some split testing to see what the effect of any changes to my copy have against that baseline.
