    You might consider approaching them.

In addition to Mark's excellent suggestions, I would practice as much as possible and get hold of as many good quality ebooks written by respected copywriters and read and re-read them until you start to grasp the overall principles.

    Hi Gavin,

You mentioned my course and prospective students
who ask I usually point them to my Fiverr gig or
simply point out that they have a trial period to
test the waters for about the same price.

The real test of the pudding is in the eating.

      Hi Gavin,

The first resource I used to learn about copywriting was the AWAI 'Accelerated Program For Six-Figure Copywriting' by Michael Masterson. It gives you all you need to start, plus you get email support, critiques of your work etc if you buy direct from AWAI.

It costs about $500 I think. I picked up a used copy from ebay for $50 which of course didn't have the support.

      Hope that helps,

      Tim.

You'll find some good information about direct response copywriting in a classic book titled "How to Write a Good Advertisement - A Short Course in Copywriting" by Victor O. Schwab.

It may be available at your public libarary, or you can order it from Amazon for $13.24:

How to Write a Good Advertisement: Victor O. Schwab: 9780879803971: Amazon.com: Books

There are many other resources, of course, but this one is a good introduction. Even though it is not a recent book, much of the information is timeless.

Another direct response classic worth searching for at your library is "Advertising Secrets of the Written Word" by Joseph Sugarman.

I just read both of these, literally the last two books I have read. Both are excellent. Really good stuff. I think Sugarman's book is my favorite so far.

I've read Dan Kennedy's Ultimate Sales Letter, which is good for an intro. Plus he gives you a lot of non-copywriting tips. Then Bly's Copywriter's Handbook. Which I found a little light on copywriting but great for the backend of copywriting (how to do research, how to service your client etc.)

But then I started on Schwab's book which was great. Concrete tips on how to write an advertisement.

Then I started Sugarman's book and so far it's my favorite. It's as if the other books are theory, then you go grab a piece of paper and you are like, "wait how do I start this?"

You read Sugarman's book and he says, this is how you write your first line. It should be short. And here is your second line. I liked it so much I went to Amazon to buy his other two books, but the reviews all said they were word for word the same. So I didn't. I wrote my first ad after reading Sugarman's book. It was the first one that made me say, now I can write an ad.

I haven't deployed the ad yet. But it's my first real one I intend to use (lead gen ad).

I think I'm going to try Caples Tested Advertising Methods next. I've heard great things. And so cheap.

It's crazy you can get the knowledge from people who have made millions. For $11 on Amazon.

Yes, it is, and the classic information doesn't change much either. Techniques and tools may change with regularity, but basic human nature seems remarkably consistent.

You may be interested in other classics from this list:

Find some Great Sales copy like in the Million Dollar Mailings book. Then you need to grab some paper and Hand write some of these letters. This will help you understand copy and flow. And over time you will get better and better.
