Already getting visits from SEO, but not conversions...How to test, what to improve?...Where to start?

Hi fellow warriors, I have a local client who runs a yoga studio and his website is ranking pretty well, but the conversions (contact form quires) are not doing so good, its in town with over a million people. What is the best way to start testing things and improve the website and get people to start calling more often? Should I start with the website structure... find out where which neighborhood people are looking for the most? How do I do that? Offering a freebie... I mean, what will be the best way test and to find out what will work and what will not fast?

Thank you in advance...

This isn't really a copywriting question (yet), but here's a quick simplified answer to your question.

To start with, you need to find out what is happening with the website traffic by using analytics.

You need to know where the site traffic is coming from, why, and what is happening when they hit the site - time on the site, entry pages, exit pages, time on pages, flow through the site, that sort of thing. (These are just the basics.)

Only then can you work on optimizing the site and funnel to get more people to take the desired action (call, use the inquiry form, whatever it is). Otherwise, you'll just be flying blind. With a good grip on the analytics information, you'll be able to use split testing or multivariate optimization to further fine-tune the site's copy, presentation, navigation, or whatever needs improvement.

Take a look at Google Analytics and its Content Experiments (formerly aka Google Website Optimizer).

To what Steve says, I'll add that the site seems like a good candidate for a local ad campaign on Adwords... which you can then quantify using Analytics as Steve already suggests. Doing this will allow you test different keywords to see which convert better; as the thing with SEO is that you can attract visitors to your site via keywords that don't convert. Thus, it may not be your copywriting per say, rather that you're attracting the wrong kind of visitors.

    Even though you didn’t give the link to the site, here are a few test suggestions (in addition to the above);
    · Test offering different bonuses
    · Test new header graphics
    · Test different colors used for emphasis
    · Test different background colors
    · Test using different numbers of testimonials
    · Test putting testimonials in different places on the page
    · Test using audio or video on your page

If people aren't calling... you need to give them a reason to call.

Outside of getting traffic, converting that traffic into callers/customers
    is the most crucial step.

So, what do these potential yoga prospects want?

    What are they looking for?

You have to design and create the site with that
    in mind.

Make it simple to read, easy to understand, and give the
reader an action to take...either download a free report or
giving them an incentive to call.

Free report on increasing flexibility in 5 days, or
a free trial offer to come in for a class, etc...

Think of what the prospect wants in regards to
yoga, then write the site to cater to that.

Keep the prospect in the forefront of your mind
as you're writing and designing the site, and
just list all the benefits/reasons they should
go with this yoga instructor and then tell
them to call. give them incentive to call.

Keep it simple and write/design the site
as if you were the prospective yoga
client... what would you want/need to
read in order to sign up or call.
