This is a thread about subject lines.

Why are you reading this right now?

If I were to tell you that I have a fool-proof $200/day LinkedIn/CPA system, would you be really interested?

I bet you would. And I bet the title of this thread would have little to no impact on your level of interest in my offer.

I can assume your interest because I know that I am in an IM forum. All my title/subject has to do is get you to click.

So now that you've been baited into reading this, I have a question.

Do you think this would work with e-mail subject lines? Perhaps a good way to regain your open rate from a neglected list?

    This was a nice catch!

Read your post all the way through!

And yes, you are right, creative subject lines increase the open rate big time.

Do you mind if I borrow it?

I think something very out of character could re kindle that users relationship with you maybe not the exact title of this thread, seems kinda spammy. But I see where you are coming from

Yes, it does work but make sure not to overuse it. People become immune to this pretty quickly, especially when you repeatedly do 180° turnarounds between subject line and content like you did in this thread.

It's interesting, because I'm subscribed to many email lists and each internet marketer uses there own strategy for getting me to open their email. Some of them use lines like "Your paycheck just came in" others take a very serious approach "It's now or never". In fact, the last email that I opened claimed "Your balance is -20.89". Anyway these messages do get me to open there email but I got to say that the follow up needs work. Its not the fact that their advertising a product its just the fact that the message inside of the email turns me off. So for me the title and the message inside the email share equal value.

The bait is effective and worked on me here but I also am more engaged here from a stranger's post most times than a marketer in my inbox or worse spam box. I still think a great headline will most certainly increase your open rate, there's no doubt about that.

Maybe that is a testament to the difference between e-mail and social media. I can imagine something like the title of this thread working on Facebook as well. But e-mail, or PPC?

      Maybe not so much.

Deceptive subject lines can often get you opens, but not conversions. There is also legal issues if it is commercial in nature.

If the subject line does not relate to the body it tends to tick people off.

If a product does not measure up to a hyped subject and body of a marketing email your heading for trouble. I cherish my contacts as much as close friends. If you lie to your friends, what happens? You lose a friend, his buddies, and your reputation goes to squat.

2 schools of thoughts.. definitely took my attention.. but then again, some will be reading your post and losing trust when the actual content is unrelated... while some while just ignore it and read your post and maybe be interested in it.. it is a double edge sword.. use it to effectively..

Personally if I got that subject line in my email from someone whose email address I recognized, I'd assume the account was hijacked and delete without opening. Though if I got it from someone whose email address I don't recognize, it'd never get read either.

    Not really.

People who've been tricked feel betrayed and won't buy.

As an aside, if your email subject line has nothing to with the content of the email, the email is in violation of Federal law (CAN-SPAM Act of 2003).

Misleading headlines piss most people off. Unless I really, really loved the marketer I'd opt out.

People do this all the time with their lists & it could turn out good or bad. I've personally seen emails with such titles go horribly wrong and got many negative responses.
