Where do i start? I want to learn how to write persuasively!

Hi,

I have a profitable internet marketing business. I work mostly in the iGaming industry and do well. Mostly though because i rank for keywords in Google and provide good call's to action.

I don't really "sell" at all. I just provide information and go "here is the link, go check it out" kind of..

Anyway, to cut a long story short: I am stepping in to the make money online industry and want to become an expert salesman. I want to write persuasively and make people want to buy when they read my content, reviews, whatever...

So with all of that being said, i have a few questions:
  • Where do i start?
  • What are the best books on this topic?
  • What are the best blogs on this topic?
  • Who are the "trusted experts" at this?

Again, many thanks for your help and time. All the best folks.

Sounds like you might be selling more than you're thinking -- you have a profitable business, after all.

If you have a good product, provide info about your product, and good calls to action, that's a good start. Why switch industries to become 'an expert salesman'? Why not start by reading the books you're looking for, tweak the sales pages you have, and see if you can increase conversions on those?

I suggest the classics: anything by Ogilvy, Tested Advertising Methods by John Caples, How to Write a Good Advertisement by Victor Schwab, The Ultimate Sales Letter by Dan Kennedy…there's lots more...

Basically the whole reason i am "switching" (When i reality i am doing both), is simply because what i do relies to much on Google.

I have had scares where i have lost significant portions of my business (Up to 1/3rd) in one go due an algorithm change at the whim of Google.

I want to teach the stuff i know about SEO and build a a better more sustainable business that isnt at the mercy of Google. So i want to become an expert in all things related to making money online.

If i can become an expert SEO i can become and conversion "expert", i can learn to sell, i can also learn other traffic generation methods as well.

I think it is complimentary really, basically i dont want to stick all my eggs in one basket. And when it comes to iGaming, it's virtually all SEO/conversion/monetization. Sure you can do social media and video marketing, but those channels are less profitable.

Anyway, i am sure you dont want to hear my life story (As he say's 5 paragraphs later), thank you for the book recommendations. I'm going straight to Amazon now

Google 'Scientific advertising' and download that. It's the best place to get started.

    And it's free.

You can also get a good book through my link below. That's also free.

  • Andy,

Here are two persuasion formula's -

    Gary Bencivenga's Persuasion Equation:

    Urgent Problem

    + Unique Promise

    + Unquestionable Proof

    + User-Friendly Proposition

    + Unbelievably Good Price

    + Urgency of Purchase

    = Persuasion

    David Frey

    Get attention

    Identify the problem

    Provide the solution

    Present your credentials

    Show the benefits

    Give social proof

    Make your offer

    Inject scarcity

    Give a guarantee

    Call to action

    Give a warning

    Close with a reminder

David Frey – (Expanded Version by Mal – The Copy Nazi)

    21 part sales letter formula

    1. Call out to your audience

    2. Get their attention

    3. Backup the big promise headline with a quick explanation (with a subheadline)

    4. Identify the problem

    5. Provide the solution

    6. Show pain of and cost of development

    7. Explain ease-of-use

    8. Show speed to results

    9. Future cast

    10. Show your credentials

    11. Detail the benefits

    12. Get social proof

    13. Make your offer

    14. Add bonuses

    15. Build up your value

    16. Reveal your price (pop by button)

    17. Inject scarcity (if any)

    18. Give guarantee

    19. Call to action

    20. Give a warning

    21. Close with a reminder

    With An Eight-Part Copy Test

    1. Did you grab your readers by the throat your readers with your headline?

    2. Did you clearly explain that you understand the problem?

    3. Did you show them so much proof that they can’t possibly doubt what
    you had to say?

    4. Did you show features and benefits to your offer that included the word
    so in each line?

    5. Did you ensure your prospects that your product will be very very easy
    to use?

    6. Did you ensure to your prospects that your product would work very
    quickly to solve the problem?

    7. Did you clearly explain the pain of the experience by not accepting your
    offer?

    8. Did you demonstrate incredible value in your offer so much so that your
prospect would feel stupid by not buying your product?

    Hope this helps,

    Steve

That's a great introduction to writing sales letters but I wouldn't
go so far as saying that EVERY sales letter online is based on
that outline. In fact, there is no one-size-fits-all sales letter
template. The structure of a sales letter depends on too many
factors to have such a template.

Writing persuasively really isn't that hard.

You just have to read persuasive writers. Like Timothy Ferris. Then try to write like he does. Whats really hard, is writing copy that converts. Thats a totally different story imo.

Good copy to me is a form of organized persuasive writing. And there are a lot of subliminal "tricks" copywriters know how to use, to spice up their copy. But when it comes down to it, the offer is the most important part. And writing a solid offer, for me, still isn't easy.

Like I said, the best place to start is read read read. Read persuasive writers. Then read copywriters like Gary Halbert. Read a book called "hypnotic selling" which is based heavily on NLP.

To me, if you read persuasive writers, then study nlp, THEN read copywriters, you'll be able to spot a lot more of what they're actually doing. What you'll realize about great copywriters, its almost like watching a magic trick and trying to figure out what they're doing. And they will add things that you can read 100 times, and still not grasp whats actually being done. So read read read, apply apply apply. Thats always the best formula for learning.
