What is Copywriting?
Copywriting is creating written text for the purpose of selling products, services and ideas. Wikipedia says, "
Copywriting is writing copy for the purpose of advertising or marketing. The copy is meant to persuade someone to buy a product, or influence their beliefs."
Many people confuse copywriting with "copyright" which has to do with the legal rights and protection assigned to a creative work.
Others also say copywriting when they mean "content writing" like writing articles. Content writing is not copywriting and content writers are not copywriters. If someone says, "Go to Elance for work - they need copywriters to write articles," they should have said "they need content writers to write articles."
In the advertising world, there are copywriters that work at ad agencies writing ads for various clients. Usually these are branding or "image" ads, which rely on a catchy slogan or funny idea.
On the other hand, many copywriters write "direct response" ads like long-form sales letters that eschew "image" in favor of pure salesmanship: Presenting a solid sales story about the product and asking for the order. These are the kinds of ads most often used in internet marketing and discussed here.
How To Get Started
Are you just starting out? Here are some threads with advice to brand new copywriters. Many people start by reading a few inexpensive books like "The Ultimate Sales Letter" by Dan Kennedy. Then they might purchase a copywriting course. (Here are 2 lists of copywriting books to check out:
Mr. Subtle's Desert Island book list and
the list of recommended copywriting books.)
Some decide to work with a mentor who can guide them step by step. It works well and several mentors are listed further down this post--many are Warrior Forum regulars, and you can send them a private message to find out more about their program.
