Copywriting the old fashioned way - selling new inventions

Before the advent of the Internet...

Before the days of instant electronic transmissions, before the days of software programs, plugin's, and God only knows what else, copywriters were constantly on the lookout for new products to bring to market.

These could be household products, automotive products, manufacturing products, educational products, disability products, you name it.

If you're a copywriting newbie you could be mistaken for thinking we all only make our money selling the likes of online information products, tutorials, guides, software etc;

However one thing you don't see addressed very often these days is copywriters actively seeking new retail products to sell which have potential mass market appeal.

Every day all around the globe people are inventing new products and not just in the technology arena.

Every day all around the world people are also recycling / upcycling old products on the market and repurposing them for use in new exciting ways.

If you're a copywriter looking for work, the choice of which market to go for, the choices in front of you are staggering - limited only by your imagination. The whole world is full of opportunity everywhere you look.

For example, if you're into sailing and boats in general, look for new products entering the market in the maritime industry.

If you're a stay at home mum and love time saving gadgets which you can use around the home, look out for new household gadgets and inventions.

If you're into helping to make other people's lives easier, perhaps for those suffering disabilities or for the elderly, here is another market you can explore for new inventions or even older inventions which still might have massive appeal in today's market.

If you're into cars and motorsport, again the number of new inventions coming to market globally is very high, could you not find something online which has been invented in the past 12 months or so, a company perhaps who needs help with their marketing, to bring to market their brand new product?

If you're into outdoor pursuits, walking, rambling, mountaineering etc; again do the same.

All of these niches and many, many more are all potential markets waiting for a good copywriter with drive, passion, and excellent written communication and selling skills to come along, approach them and help take their new business up to the next level and beyond.

Just now I did a little search online myself, now check this little product out for example:

What does it do?

It sterilizes household items, for example your mp3 player and whatnot.

Germs from other people can reside on these objects for weeks at a time spreading disease and germs to anyone else coming into direct contact with these items.

It fires an ultraviolet beam at the item, sterilizing it, completely getting rid of the nasties and germs which could cause you to fall ill at any time.

Don't believe there's a great benefit here? Well think about it like this...

In the UK this winter the norovirus is spreading like wildfire across the country. It's thought that at the moment up to 1 million people could be carrying this super bug almost indestructible virus.

What is the norovirus?

It's commonly referred to as the winter vomiting bug. Without warning anyone can fall prey to this super bug. Come into contact with anything which was or is in the possession of someone carrying this virus and chances are you'll go down with it yourself.

It's one of the most, if not the most contagious diseases on the planet with no known cure.

Symptoms can last 2-3 days and start typically when somebody almost without warning will spew their guts up in volatile projection.

These vomiting bouts will continue about once every 15-20 minutes for the duration of the illness (2-3 days). When they suddenly puke up and this splays out everywhere, the germs from the virus come into contact with every surface it contacts and stays there waiting for somebody to come along, touch said item or surface with their hands and so the virus is constantly transmitted.

Resistant to all but the most powerful bleaches the germs can live on a surface for many weeks at a time. Anybody going down with this illness is urged to avoid at all costs contact with any other people, not to visit the doctors surgery, not to see anyone at all for a period of several days.

So you can imagine quite easily as a copywriter how in this present climate of fear of catching this illness, people will be looking for anything which will help them to avoid catching it.

Priced at approximately $125 (USD) this JF-UVW1B Influsaber could be the answer to many peoples prayers.

And this is just one product from millions of available products out there.

If you're a copywriter you really shouldn't be struggling to find work. You shouldn't be struggling to find clients. They are literally all around you. You just need to get off your behind and go look for them.

Whatever your passion is, wherever your interests lie, go research this niche, find out what products and services people are selling in this niche and then position right in front of their eyeballs, with the benefits you uniquely offer as a copywriter, to help take their business up a notch to acquire further business and sales.

It's a win-win-win for everyone bringing your skills to the table.

Don't just think web copywriting either. If you want to test a product first to see what the response is like for any one particular product, take out a full page ad in a specialist magazine pertaining to this niche, write the copy for the product in question, share multiple ways to order and be sure to track your responses from each channel utilized.

Hopefully this thread will inspire a few of you to start taking more proactive action.

    Alrighty then...

    Site says it also gets rid of mold...plus...you'd never again wonder if your kid should be eating that thing on the sidewalk that looks like bubble gum.

    You get a neat pair of safety goggles to wear while you're zapping germs

    Hey, you'd look important using it, even if the radiation melted off most of your face.

    Wonder how you'd really know if it got rid of the germs.

    The robot thing is pretty cool. Maybe they could make it like the Roomba that automatically sweeps your carpet. You could just turn it on and have it cleaning your drive while you were doing critiques on the WF. Another benefit, you'd never have to get mad at your wife again for not shoveling the drive.

    Probably would cost a lot -- but then again, it'd be way sexier then buying another Yugo.

    You'd have to be half-out of your mind to want to work at marketing inventions for a living...

    I don't want go all the way down that road, but I will say this - it is an evergreen market if ever there was one for an industrious copywriter.

    And it's a brutally unforgiving marketplace.

    Hunter S. Thompson's classic description of the music biz comes to mind:

    "The [invention] business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

    Skeered yet? No?

    Ok then, onward...

    Let's sell some inventions!


    About The Market For The Invention

    • Define the market for this improvement or innovation. Is it a mass market or niche?
    • Health [] Beauty [] Home Improvement [] Garden [] Sports [] Fitness [] Tools & Hardware [] Technology [] etc.
    • Define the end-user for this improvement or innovation. Are they actively seeking a solution like this?
    • Professional [] Enthusiast [] etc.
    • Are people already spending money on solving their problems in this market? On what?
    • Is this a growing market, a flat market, or a declining market?


    About The Invention Itself

    • Is the invention easily understandable? Can the average consumer "get" the idea in 30 seconds or less?
    • What is the invention's biggest "Wow!" benefit to the end user?
    • What vexing problem does it solve for the end user?
    • Is it demonstrable? Can you easily demonstrate the "Wow!" benefit?
    Complete this sentence:
    Finally, [END USERS] can [PRIMARY BENEFIT] without [PROBLEM SOLVED BY INVENTION]
    Construct a "mechanism" for how the invention delivers the benefit (or solves the problem):
    • Step 1) Step 2) Step 3)
    • Something --> Something Else = Something New
    • "The FixxyFlat's secret is in its puncture-sealing microweave fibers that instantly reform their air-tight bond around nails, screws or anything else you run over..."

    Make a bold claim, prove it, tell them how to get it - leave everything else out. (hat tip: Ted Cooper)

    What is the most direct media for reaching your target market? TV? Radio? Direct Mail? PPC? Social Media?

    The overwhelming majority of new product ideas or inventions will fail to reach profitability, often spectacularly.

    Notice I didn't say, "fail." - I said, "fail to reach profitability".

    The most heartbreaking aspect of the invention business is the slow death many experience. They consume resources voraciously, but often only eek out reward enough to justify a continual slow-bleed of time, money and attention that would otherwise be reallocated to more profitable use.

    And so they die a lengthy, draining "death of a thousand checks".

    But inventors love their babies - even and especially the ugly ones.

    And that's where the real problems start - with inventors who have created something valuably unique, but are otherwise in the way of virtually every other aspect of bringing their vision to reality. Few understand direct-marketing the way you do, so you'll earn every friggin' penny for your efforts.

    In the end, if yours is the name payable on one (or ten) of the "thousand checks", you may or may not care about the rest of it. That's yours to figure out. If you're playing with skin in the game, it's a tough nut to crack. But the reward inside is tasty when you manage to pry one open without breaking it into a million pieces.

      There are some major caveats to working with inventors. But no doubt, it can be done and guys like us are doing it. Here's one:

      To find inventors, I've given this information out privately before and I know it's appreciated:

      Submit your product ideas to retailers, manufacturers and As Seen on TV (ASOTV) at Edison Nation

      Kickstarter

      There are other forums that attract inventors and entrpepreneurs as well. Crowdfunding and microlending sites work well too.

      Even hanging out on eBay and seeing interesting products that are being sold and approaching will get your marketing juices flowing.

      Join the forums, follow up with members, contribute, participate, etc.

      I can tell you this, there's nothing more exciting than watching an idea take off.

      I read your post and agree with you on some of what you said, however, I have to respectfully disagree that your idea that someone would be out of his mind to market an invention is a falsity.

      I don't think so. I was always told growing up that you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it. A world famous copywriter once said that when there is a need, people will buy it, no matter what it is.

      I believe that. If you have had enough experience to provide that statement, so be it. But I also have had experience to prove the opposite. This means that there are two-sides to the coin. Some people are so good at marketing that they can sell snow to Eskimos.

      For those that like inventing - happy inventing and happy marketing.

  • Yes, the invention game is very compelling but as Brian pointed out it's fraught with problems.

    Joe Sugarman said when he marketed a "better mousetrap" it bombed.

    Thankfully he did extremely well with the sunglasses.

    And when James Dyson invented a better vacuum initially he experienced every obstacle imaginable with enormous hassle, but now has word wide success.
