John Caples Interview: Finding The Appeal

Maybe this has been posted in the past, but came across a great interview with John Caples this evening.

There's bullets upon bullets of incredible wisdom and power...check it out here:

Daniel Levis Interviews John Caples

Probably a good bit of rudimentary stuff for veterans, but worth a read if you haven't seen it already. And worth a second read if you have.

EDIT: this is an interview by Daniel Levis with himself acting as John Caples, then reposted by this blog without clarification....d'oh!

    Nice one.

Daniel is good. He must have been, what, two years old when he did this interview?

Though Caples died in June of 1990 and he may have been interviewed for this, I have doubts as to whether he actually said some of these things as the words attributed to him in this article are words more in keeping with usage after 1990, such as, "online advertising," "today you'd call them info products" and "Internet."

Yeah, clearly there are statements that could have not possibly come from Caples...and I don't believe Daniel Levis was involved in copywriting whatsoever at the time of Caples' death.

So all told, I'm not sure what to make of the whole thing, aside from the attribution to Total Package. Could have been something "reimagined" or something, but clearly not an actual interview.

Regardless, some really good info throughout the interview that I'm sure came from interviews with Caples at some point in time.

LOL...I remember having a conversation with Daniel Levis right after he made this post.

They guy you link to didn't post the whole original post.

The original post was talking about a technique that Napoleon Hill mentioned in the final chapters of his book where he would have an imaginary meeting with some of the greats of the past. This post was a take on that technique.

The original post was in Clayton's blog.

LOL thanks for clearing that up! To be honest I did not know who Daniel Levis was when I read the interview....it wasn't until I saw Rezbi's post that I looked him up and thought WTF?

Some great points still by Daniel, acting as Caples...

Yes, this is what it is.

I was just kidding about Daniel's age.

    I actually do this...

I have in mind Eugene, Halbert, Clayton and Bencivenga...

When I work on something and am stuck, I'll think "So what do you guys think of this headline?"

And they'll respond based on what I believe is their strength. It's weird to describe what happens but for some reason somebody will say something right.

So for example Clayton will ask, "Does it grab their emotion?" And Eugene will respond "Wait, before the emotion, what is their current mindset?"

It's weird but then Gary will chime in, "Have you written 50 headlines or is that your first attempt?"

And I'll respond, "It's my 5th try" and he'll laugh.

    So yeah...

I know it's probably out of the ordinary - but it's helped me tremendously.

I'll have an imaginary conversation with Dan Kennedy. I'll say, "what do you think of this sales letter?" and he'll say, "It's not bad. And what's standing between you getting "not bad" results and getting "Oh My Gosh, I Need Wheelbarrows To Carry The Tons Of Profits This Cash Generating Machine Of A Sales Letter Is Making For Me... Not Monthly... Not Weekly... But DAILY... Literally FLOODING My Mail Box With So Many Orders, the Mail Box Is Sagging From Weight" kind of results that send your kids to the finest schools and make it possible to fly on private jets as I customarily do, is to get my life changing, mega money making, sales letter writing course."
