Personally, I wouldn't worry about it because the typical reader isn't going to notice the font difference when the body copy is set at 10pt. Get the kerning/leading right and you should be fine.

So what should I use for headline and body copy?

Most of the inside page headlines our local paper uses are Serif. The sample below shows a screen shot of one of the paper's headlines and my recreation of it using Times (again):

Close enough that most readers could not tell the difference.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

The type on the left is a screen shot of what font my local newspaper is using. I duplicated it (on the right) using simple Times (with some kerning/leading adjustment). It's close enough that the average reader wouldn't notice. (I could have gotten closer by using another font (like maybe Caslon or Century.)

One of the best fights I ever got into - outside of the Warrior Forum - was when I would place ads in the Miami Herald and duplicate their page layout.

Since I was a large advertiser, I got a call from the editor in chief who told me that I was violating their advertising terms because I was using "their font".

      I asked him....

Would it be fair to assume you have your own font for the Miami Herald? Yes.

And can I assume that no one has that font but you? Yes.

And can I assume that font has a special name? Yes.

So how can I be using your font if I couldn't possibly have it?

The guy didn't know what to say...

    Hi there,

Another handy site if your newspaper uses some weird fonts is:

    WhatTheFont! « MyFonts

Simply scan a small portion of the font and upload it. Their system will automatically provide you with three or four alternatives.

    All the best,

    Sasha.
