On getting more clients & using a boxer's approach to sharpening your copy

Hey guys,

Had a chat with a younger copywriter yesterday and decided to share some of that conversation here.

First how to do like a boxer when it comes to sharpening your copy skills.

Most people would assume that getting one's punches down right in boxing is in the ring, but when I was training, I discovered that it came from a very simple thing - laying our fists up to a punching bag and pushing it forward and holding it there to make sure it wouldn't roll off our knuckles.

Well, the same applies with copy. Instead of continuing to write non-stop (I'm sure some of you will hate this) - pencil in a day or two off now and again...and go do some tele-marketing for someone.

Yup - you heard me.

I don't care if you're an "introverted copywriter" - keep in mind that you are nonetheless a salesman and marketer and as such you do need a degree of connection to the people.

Now, as a copywriter, you have a job to do, so you can't be spending all your time tele-marketing and not too many firms will be too keen about hiring you for only two days a month.

So that means you should WORK FOR FREE.

Yup, once again, you heard me - work only for commission.

This way, you'll have more incentive to sharpen up them skills.

Here's the bonus...it has happened that doing these gigs has produced copy work for me and a couple of colleagues in the past. I guess it's that fact that business owners are drawn to serious individuals and there's nothing more serious than a copywriter who's willing to work for straight commission just to work out his marketing muscles.

Just a thought...:-)
