I Know This Is EXTREMELY Cheeky But...

Hey Guys,

I know this is cheeky but I need your help again. I get so much great help and advice everytime I make a post I feel guilty coming back for more. But here it is...

We have just finished developing an online backup software. Its a piece of software you download onto your computer and then it automatically backups your important files to a secure datacentre where we take up to 36 copies of the data to ensure it is safe.

To draw people in we are offering a free 2 gigabyte account. I plan to launch the adwords campaign next week and I'm in the process now of writing and designing the landing pages.

Here is where I need help. What angle should I come from? I have already wrote a script and had a voice over guy speak it (PM me if you want to hear it). I want to stay away from a sales page look, focusing on screen shots and benefits with easy to read bullet points.

What angle should I use to get people to sign up? What type of headline should I use? Is there anything I should bear in mind with the landing page design?

Thanks in advance (I love you guys!!)

There are other companies already offering this service. At least one is free to sign up online, and another came with a free account card in the box with my latest hard drive purchase.

I think most people would figure that once data is in your data center, you'll do whatever backups you need to do to keep it safe. 36 copies sure sounds like overkill. Maybe you have a ZFS pool across 36 drives, but even then you're getting into information that is way deeper than most people care about.

I'd rather know that you have more than one data center location. So if, say, London floods, there's another copy in Paris and my data can still be auto-recovered.

    Regards,
    Allen

Thanks for the reply Allen. The numerous copies is done by snapshots from our san device. It is all way over my head but we have a pretty decent bit of kit. We have 1 million gigabyte storage capability and our representative at sun said we are the only private company in europe to have one of these devices.

We don't have a datacentre in paris but I will mention about the locations that their data is stored for sure.

Any other selling points or angles I can use to move the reader into a sale. I'm not sure whether to drum home the pain of all the things that can happen if they don't backup.

Why not use video with audio testimonials. In the video educate your customers about data base back up. Show them the process of all the effort that your company takes to secure there data and privacy.
I know that most data companies do pretty much the same thing you do. But the first one to educate the customers will gain the market share.

Just like Hopkins did with Shlitz beer.

Ahh yes, he was the guy who talked about how it was triple filtered and made with mineral water etc...?

Sounds good but I'm launching adwords this weekend hopefully so won't have time to do a tour of data centre with a camera just yet but it's definately a great idea! I'll get onto it soon as I get some interim landing pages up.

      Who are you targeting?

      Solopreneurs?
      WAHM-type businesses?

      To draw people in?
Tell a few stories of people who lost their computers, printers, faxes, phones, office furniture etc in some disaster (fire, theft, flooding).... got brand new stuff to replace it all and still went out of business coz they had no reliable data backup to restore customer list, order info, inventory etc....

I remember Kobe earthquake in Japan many years ago... some businesses worked mightily to get physical premises and computers etc online but still went out of business because of inadequate backup. IIRC, there was one sad case where the company's backup tapes where in the damaged building but the authorities would not let them in to retrieve because it was too dangerous... existing customers just drifted away or were poached by competitors

This is the main website, it won't be targtted to any specific person, just anyone who wants to use a backup service. We will create niche sites afterwards targetting specific type of people like photographers etc..

We have both business and personal accounts. Anyone who uses a computer and wants a reliable bacup is an ideal candidte for our service. One of our main competitors claims for have 5 million customers.

What do you do when your computer Starts showing symptoms like these...
wheezing, whinning, your screen begins to flicker unccontrolably? Suddenly alarms begin to go off! You don't know where they are coming from. Then Nothing.
(Your computer is fried like a lousy Mcdonalds deal meal). As if anything else could go wrong you have a $100,000.00 closing in an hour And your contracts just got deep fried with your hard drive

    Hey Wrcato,

I think that would make a great video presentation, could have a guy crying he just lost his report he spent all month preparing!

      Some angles:

For personal users - the simplicity of "set and forget" - your files are auto backed-up securely over the Net. Encrypted data (personal finance files etc).

For Business users - how to safely and securely backup AND restore down to the individual file level, if necessary. I think that demonstrating good data security and encryption practices will be important for these prospects if they are to trust you with backing up customer details internationally (data protection act etc).

Another possible "objection" point for some savvy business users is the backup company's financial status. i.e. if they go out of business what happens to my backup data? ... I know of at least 1 very large company where this suddenly happened to their backup provider. The only happy people were the lawyers...

So, if your product is also able to backup locally to a client's external disk drives AND run jobs to backup to your offsite facility, that might be a selling point for some prospects.

      My 10 yen...

      mark
