I have read a lot of threads and am trying to distinguish which copywriting courses are geared toward offline writing opposed to online. In other words I am looking for a copywriting course that is not geared to online marketing.

Thank You!

Mike, there is no real difference. The one uses a landing page that you can click, the other uses a piece of paper. Transposing the opportunity to click needs to be transposed to filling in a form or picking up a phone - or even going to an online landing page!

One reason that offline courses have dropped off the radar is that online is where you can split test your message in days not months - and for 100x less money too.

If you want a course for offline copywriting, the guy to follow is Dan Kennedy. He loves offline, always has and always will. If this is your taste in copy, he's the one to start with. Other than that, find something from the 40s or 50s - the oldies are still goodies. Most of the techniques that are used online were developed in the early part of the last century - for example, split testing was first used around 1910.

    Does this help any? M

I want to thank you for the advice. I have read books from dk and have learned a lot from them. I also have read 50 to over 100 books on copywriting from caples, ogilvy, as well as books to date. I just kept reading on this forum how certain courses will better your online writing, etc. i guess you clarified that it would work for both.

      Thank You

  • Look up Andrew Cavanaugh here at WF. He is an offline consultant and copywriter and has some products that might meet your needs. I don't know specifically as I don't own any of them but you can check it out.

  • Mike,

The only key issue is all the tech stuff to make an inter web site work.

    Essentially getting traffic to it.

As Mr Moriarty said, there is no real difference in the copywriting (sometimes a tweak or two on the design and layout* because people are reading off a screen rather than a page).

    Steve

P.S. * A couple of examples. You might make the font a little larger and inter web friendly (like Arial or Verdana) so it can be read easily.

On a squeeze page always make the opt in box above the fold. Because people may not scroll down.

The best course I've seen geared towards offline copywriting is Brian Keith Voiles' course, "Ad Magic".

It's for sale on eBay (not by me) here: Brian Keith Voiles Ad Magic Copywriting Marketing CDROM | eBay

Online copywriting is practically a new field compared to offline
copywriting. Most if not all online copywriting courses were
adapted from offline courses that were simply digitized.

As mentioned above, elements unique to a website
layout and 'clickability' factor into some areas of online
copywriting but not so much to change the "rules".

  • I think there is a real opportunity to use long copy for offline clients. Many local clients I talk to have been told to use short copy. That may be true for some pages but I believe if you can get them to test long copy on their product pages they will be successful. I've used long copy for physical products and local service trades alike and it works well.

I would recommend you use DanKennedy and Brian Tracey. When I started years ago I knew nothing about copywriting however by following their two programs I've earnt 7 figures. Brian Tracey offers a CD course called "Psychology of Sales" it is fantastic for explaining all the points buyers need to see covered.
