Naming Products.. Any Tips?

Hi guys

Im in the process of developing my product - Photoshop video training for Digital Artists. The product is unique in the fact that it covers the artistic skills (composition, moodboards etc.) never touched upon by the other training providers, and includes a bonus course advising how to market and sell digital art services.

I am totally struggling with the name though!! At the moment I have: Art System Photoshop - but it feels dry and unexciting. Im normally good with words, but this is stumping me real bad.

These are the main tenets of the training:

  • Covers the most important technical aspects of learning Photoshop in the shortest time possible.
  • It's an 'artistic' course, aimed at budding digital artists.
  • It covers marketing, promotion and dealing with freelance situations.

Any pointers in regards to naming a product will be greatly appreciated!

This should be helpful to you:

Free Business Name & Tag Line Generator | Generate a Company Name, Product Name or Tag Line

Obviously, the original intention of the site is to name a business or create a tag line, however, just use the steps to name your product instead.

That was a phenomenally helpful link, thanks so much. There's enough info there to really get this down. Cheers!

No problem man, my suggestion to you is when you have a few product names in mind, come back and make a new thread with some of the list of possibilities. Then people can probably chime in with what sounds best.

However, just be aware if you do share here, a competitor could see your ideas and possibly steal it (probably low probability, but you do have to remember you're on a very highly trafficked marketing forum.)

Either way, I'm glad the link helped.

LOL, I also just realized in the link it does say "product name" too.

Not claiming myself as professional copywriter now, but I like that word "moodboards". I would use it in sub line if it would be my product. Something like "The only xyz with moodboards".

There's no contest. What you need is, without a doubt, "Positioning" by Ries and Trout. Also "New Positioning" and "Positioning Revisited" by the same authors. And toss in "The Irresistible Offer" by Mark Joyner.

Those are full of analytical tools to use, and TONS of examples (The cure for staring at a blank page wondering).

I'd stick with PSD. Something like UltimatePSD or whatever.
If that is a good idea is really about who he's targeting (and the other words in the title). Either someone who does or doesn't know what PSD means. Be careful there or you may alienate some people.

            It's more about legalities.

I'm not sure how Adobe take to their product name being used in URL's, etc. If they're anything like ebay, you'll have a C&D letter on the way within no time.

Fortunately they're not like Ebay, the vast majority of all Photoshop info products have 'Photoshop' in the title

How about naming it Creative Photoshop or Creative-de-photoshop or Creative Photoshop Artist?

This thread was worth it for this comment alone ^

      Thanks for the comments guys.

In response to the domain issue stolting, yes - I'd always check domains during the brainstorming, a very obvious consideration, but I appreciate you taking the time to give me a headsup

Diettrific, there are many other competitor products that contain 'Photoshop' in the title, but it's well worth checking if they have any affiliation or obtained a license. I don't think they do, but it's definitely worth checking out. Thanks!

Taswir, there is already a big publication named 'Photoshop Creative'

Joking aside, I might create a blog post tutorial with that exact title. I know, 100% my readers would love it

When it comes down to deciding on a product name, I make sure that the matching domain name is available first. More specifically, the .com

No point in brainstorming product names, I.E. Art System Photoshop and designing all artwork and graphics around that name, to find out that ArtSystemPhotoshop.com is taken. (don't worry, it's still available).

So there you have it, that's how I do it.
