Mastering the low hanging fruit....

I had a newer copywriter contact me for advice. She wants to make a little extra money copywriting and just wants to work with the low hanging fruit. Does anyone have any advice on how she can position herself to have a good stream of income with these kinds of clients? Not big marketers, just people starting out or small businesses.

I would point her to this post, there's a great section about client acquisition:

Marketers just starting out are not "low hanging fruit". In fact, it's quite the opposite. Most of them don't want to pay a copywriter.

  • Alex is right. I would not use the word copywriter when speaking to small local business owners.

Look for websites that don't have a way to collect emails. Say that you help fellow business owners with their marketing by helping them keep in touch with their customers. Bill them monthly for ongoing "email services." Promotions, sales, company news, events, etc.

At first you'll have to make a lot of calls. More than you think.

Keep calling and pitching. If they say they are not interested, don't try to sell them or convince them. You want to keep moving and find the businesses who are ready for your message.

Build up references, referrals and testimonials. Keep prospecting. Become a huge success.
